What Does a Water Conditioner Do?

Also referred to as salt-free water softeners, water conditioners remove minerals, lead and organic compounds from your water that can make it smell and taste bad. The way water conditioners work depends on what type of system you have. Some rely on template-assisted crystallization (TAC) to alter the structure of the minerals in your water. Instead of removing minerals that make your water hard, these devices change the way they interact with your home’s plumbing system, preventing them from sticking to the inside of pipes and on your fixtures. As a result, your water is still hard, but you reap the benefits of softer water. Other water conditioners use carbon filters to remove unwanted compounds as they pass through the system, making it more palatable.

How a Water Softener Works

The most common method to treat hard water is through water softener systems. Water softeners remove hard minerals, such as calcium and magnesium, from water using ion exchange or reverse osmosis. Almost all water softeners use two separate tanks. One tank contains resin beads charged with sodium or potassium ions. When hard water runs through, minerals attach to the resin beads and exchange with sodium or potassium, making the water softer.

The second tank fills with a salty brine solution, which is used to regenerate the beads every two to three days. After processing a certain amount of water, the beads collect so many minerals they can’t remove any more. The salty brine fills the first tank, which removes the minerals from the beads and restores the sodium ions. This water is flushed from the system through a drain line.

Water softeners do require regular maintenance. Homeowners must add salt periodically to the brine tank to keep it running as it should.

Main Differences Between Water Conditioners and Softeners

While both water conditioners and water softeners help improve the water in your home, there are several key differences between the two systems.

  • Personal and household benefits. Because water softeners reduce hard water, they make soaps and detergents more effective for home cleaning. You may also experience less dry skin and hair. Water conditioners remove chemicals from the water, making it healthier to drink.

  • Water use. Water softeners use two tanks and require additional water to keep the system running efficiently. As a result, water softeners tend to use more water than water conditioners.

  • Salt vs. salt-free. Water softeners use salt to complete the ion exchange process. Water conditioning systems are salt-free, making them a more eco-friendly choice.

  • Effectiveness. Whole-house water conditioners prevent scale buildup and damage within your plumbing system, while water softeners work to soften your water. Both systems prevent scale, but they do it in different ways. Water softeners remove calcium and magnesium — the chemicals that make water hard — and water conditioners change the chemical structure of the particles for a certain amount of time. Water softeners reduce scale buildup on your appliances, while water conditioners don't.

  • Maintenance. Water softeners require regular maintenance to replenish the salt used in the ion exchange process, while water conditioners are generally maintenance-free.
