While replacing a door sounds simple enough, it’s a significant investment that requires careful planning. This article will walk you through the process and break down every component of the cost. In the end, you should be able to select the perfect door without any surprises when the final bill arrives.
On Average, How Much Are New Door Installation Costs?
According to data from HomeGuide, the average cost to install a new door ranges from $225 (CAD 311) for an interior door to $1,900 (CAD 2,628) for a standard exterior door. Custom doors can cost significantly more. If you’re a DIYer, you may be able to save money by installing the door yourself.
If you hire a professional, the cost of installing a new door is split into two categories:
Materials
The door itself represents a significant portion of your bill when installing a new door For closet doors and interior room doors where security isn’t a factor, a simple, hollow-core slab door can be purchased for $50 or less (CAD 69). Custom mahogany exterior doors with etched glass can cost thousands of dollars. The material, size and features of the door you choose all fall under the cost of materials.
Installation
Door installation labor costs generally range between $30 and $80 (CAD 42 and CAD 111) an hour, depending on your location. You may also pay more to have a licensed contractor or home improvement company do the installation than if you hire a local handyman. The cost of installation includes removing the old door, installing new hardware and adjusting the door to ensure it opens and closes correctly.
How Much Does Door Installation Cost by Material Type?
Most doors are made from steel, wood or fiberglass. However, there are various other door materials you can choose from. Each type has its own benefits and associated costs.
Steel. Basic steel doors cost between $100 and $400 (CAD 138 and CAD 553). Exterior steel doors offer durability, security and affordability. They're usually resistant to warping and cracking and, when filled with a foam core, can be extremely energy-efficient. The biggest downside is that any surface scratches can rust.
Wood. A plain, unfinished, hollow-core interior wood door can cost as little as $30 (CAD 42). Solid exterior doors can cost $3,500 or more (CAD 4,841), depending on the type of wood. Pine tends to be the least expensive material, while mahogany and oak are the most expensive. Wood is an excellent choice for a replacement door, but it requires regular maintenance to ensure maximum longevity.
Fiberglass. This is the most common material used for entry doors. Basic fiberglass doors range in price from $200 to $2,300 (CAD 277 to CAD 3,181). They're durable and weather-resistant and require very little maintenance. They can also be molded and textured to look like wood.
Aluminum and glass sliding doors. Prices on aluminum and glass sliding patio doors range from $500 to $4,400 (CAD 692 to CAD 6,086), depending on the construction.
Composite. The average cost for composite doors is $27 to $500 (CAD 37 to CAD 692), but high-end options may cost up to $1,000 (CAD 1,383). Composite, a blend of wood fibers, PVC and laminate, can mimic the appearance of more expensive materials but tends to be lower maintenance.
Wrought iron. This material is commonly used to cover glass panels and provide increased durability on custom entryway doors. Single doors cost between $1,500 and $5,000 (CAD 2,075 and CAD 6,916), while double iron doors cost between $3,300 and $8,000 (CAD 4,565 and CAD 11,066).
How Much Does Door Installation Cost By Style?
Whether you need a new door for your main entryway, a back entry or the interior rooms in your home, the style of door you choose can completely transform the space. While dozens of styles are available, these are some of the most common choices and their costs.
Standard entry doors. The average cost of a standard entry door plus installation ranges from $500 to $1,900 (CAD 692 to CAD 2,628). Fiberglass and steel are the cheapest options, while solid material doors tend to be more expensive.
French doors. This style features two doors that swing in or out from the center. They're often used as patio doors or to add a classic appearance to an interior room or sunroom. Installing French doors is slightly more complex than installing a standard entry door, making it a more expensive process. The average cost to install interior French doors is between $600 and $3,000 (CAD 830 and CAD 4,150). Exterior doors cost between $1,300 and $5,500 (CAD 1,798 and CAD 7,608), including installation.
Sliding glass doors. Sliding glass doors are commonly used to access patios and decks. They slide on a track that runs the entire width of the door. The cost depends on the size, frame material and energy efficiency level of the glass. Typical costs for materials and installation range from $1,200 to $4,000 (CAD 1,660 to CAD 5,533).
Storm doors. These doors are installed in front of an exterior door to provide an extra layer of protection and peace of mind. Most storm doors have a glass panel that slides up and down, covering a screen. In the summer, these doors provide extra ventilation. The average cost including installation for a storm door is between $350 and $950 (CAD 484 and CAD 1,314).
Interior doors. Interior doors are usually easier to install and can be replaced without hiring a professional. A basic hollow-core door may only cost a few hundred dollars, while solid-core French doors can cost several thousand. The average cost of an interior door plus installation is $155 to $688 (CAD 214 to CAD 952).
Barn doors. These doors are a popular interior design trend. Barn doors come in multiple sizes and open and close by sliding back and forth on an exposed metal track. Prices for these doors can be very reasonable. Hardware and installation costs can vary depending on the features you choose. The cost of a barn door including installation ranges from $400 to $1,400 (CAD 553 to CAD 1936).
How Much Does Door Installation Cost By Location?
The cost of installing an interior vs. an exterior door differs significantly.
Exterior Doors
Installing exterior front doors is a complex process. They require weatherstripping, flashing and sealing to keep out the elements and prevent energy loss. All these factors can affect the cost of installation. The average cost of installing an exterior door ranges between $500 and $1,900 (CAD 692 and CAD 2,628).
Interior Doors
Installing interior doors is much easier and faster, so it costs less. The cost of materials plus labor ranges from $225 to $825 (CAD 311 to CAD 1,141).

Door Installation: Cost Factors
Multiple factors can affect new door installation costs, such as:
Pre-hung vs. slab doors. A pre-hung door is already mounted in its frame. Slabs are just the door. If your existing frame is still in good condition, a slab may be a cheaper option.
Door framing. If you choose to install doors that are smaller or larger than your current door opening, framing and structural work must be completed. This can increase the overall cost of installation.
Hardware and accessories. These include the doorknob, lockset and hinges, which are usually sold separately from the door itself. Other accessories, such as custom handles, kickplates or mail slots, can add to the total cost.
Glass, sidelights and transoms. Glass increases the cost of any type of door. Sidelights or windows on the side of a door frame provide increased curb appeal but can also significantly raise the cost. Transom windows create a unique look but also increase the cost of a door.
Removal of old door. Many contractors include cleanup costs in the price of installation. However, you may have to pay extra to have the old door and frame removed. Removing an interior door may cost up to $80 (CAD 111), while removing an exterior door may cost up to $200 (CAD 277). Disposal fees range from $25 to $50 (CAD 35 to CAD 69).
How Much Does It Cost to Repair a Door?
Before committing to new door installation and removal costs, it's worth investigating whether your existing door can be repaired. Issues can range from fixing a small scratch to repairing a damaged door frame. Repairs can cost between $75 and $220 (CAD 104 and CAD 304).
A good rule of thumb is if the repair cost is more than 50% of the installed price of a new door, it’s worth considering a new door installation.
How Long Do Doors Last?
The lifespan of your door depends on where it’s located, what it's made of and whether it's exposed to the elements. Exterior doors are designed to last the lifetime of a home. Vinyl doors can last around 30 years, while French doors have an expected lifespan of 30 to 50 years.
