As with any complex machine with many moving parts, sometimes things break and need to be repaired or replaced. Which is all fine and dandy if your HVAC system goes kaput on a pleasant 67-degree spring or fall day with a light breeze and low-to-moderate humidity; you just nonchalantly start thumbing through the “H” section of the Yellow Pages (or … whatever) to start calling around to calmly compare quotes and find someone to come take a leisurely look at it. But in the bone-rattling depths of winter or sweltering, sweat-soaked summer doldrums, you may find yourself with an indoor air temperature emergency — and fearing that when you make that panicked call to an HVAC pro, they’ve got you over a barrel and could charge you those “supply and demand,” “what the market will bear” prices you studied in 11th-grade economics.

Indeed, just scheduling a repair is easier said than done, and repairs can be pricey. Average HVAC system repair and replacement costs have increased over the past five years by as much as 28% in some cases, according to aggregated HomeServe data as reported by our nationwide network of contractors. Meanwhile, as many as 41% of homeowners have less than $500 saved for a home repair emergency.

A look at national average prices for some of the most common HVAC repairs might help ease the sticker shock by giving you an idea of what that bill might look like, while giving you a general idea of what you should expect to pay once those quotes start coming in.

Blower Motor and Wheel: $744

The blower motor and wheel of your HVAC system work together to push cooled or heated air out of your unit, through your ductwork and into the living spaces of your house. Repairing the blower motor and wheel carries a national average cost of $744. That price is 2% higher than in 2022, when it cost $732, and 10% higher than in 2020, when it cost $677.

Fan Limit Control Switch: $349

This temperature-sensing mechanism helps ensure that only adequately warmed air from your furnace gets circulated through the home’s ductwork, and that the warmed air is regulated to ensure efficiency and safety. Repairing the fan limit control switch carries a national average cost of $349. Prices have increased 1% since 2022, when it cost $344, and nearly 16% since 2020, when it cost $301.

Gas Valve: $544

In a gas-powered furnace, the gas valve supplies fuel to the pilot light and to the burners that enable the appliance to heat your home. For a trained technician to repair your gas valve, you can expect to pay somewhere around the national average cost of $544. Prices have increased over 12% since 2022, when it cost $485, and over 28% since 2020, when it cost $424.

Condenser Fan Motor: $540

Your HVAC system’s condenser fan is located inside your outdoor air conditioning unit, positioned near the top of the unit. When your AC runs in the summer, the fan pulls outside air over the coils in order to help keep them cool and forces heat into the outdoor air, facilitating the refrigerant’s ability to release heat. To have the motor that drives the condenser fan repaired, you can expect to pay somewhere around the national average cost of $540. Prices have increased nearly 11% since 2022, when it cost $488, and over 16% since 2020, when it cost $465.

Circuit Board: $546

The circuit board is the central nervous system of your HVAC system, ensuring all the many complex electronic components of the system are working properly and cooperatively to maximize efficiency and effectiveness when heating or cooling your house. To repair this circuit board when it malfunctions, you can expect to pay somewhere around the national average cost of $546. Prices have increased 2% since 2022, when it cost $536, and nearly 11% since 2020, when it cost $492.

Condensate Pump: $434

The condensate pump on your HVAC unit forces drainage of moisture collected from the air by your system — particularly during the warmer, higher-humidity months of the year — through a pipe known as a condensate drain line, which channels that liquid into a floor drain or outside, away from the house to be absorbed into the ground. If your system can’t take advantage of gravity to facilitate the flow of collected condensate, such a pump is necessary to prevent buildup that can result in problems such as mold growth and flood damage. To repair your HVAC system’s condensate pump, you can expect to pay somewhere around the national average cost of $434. Prices have increased 1% since 2022, when it cost $429, and over 13% since 2020, when it cost $383.

Diagnostic Fee

Something to keep in mind is that plumbers (like many other types of service professionals) often charge a “callout” fee. Also referred to as a “diagnostic” fee, this is essentially how much it’s going to cost to get a plumber to drive to your home and look at your system. Even if they don’t find anything wrong, they will likely bill for this time.
