From New York to California and from Minnesota to Texas, no matter which state you’re from across the vast and varied country we share, we celebrate the things we love about where we live and we criticize the things we love less — our assets and our liabilities, our similarities and our differences. (Ain’t that America?) But beyond being bound together by geography and culture, something else that connects us all, quite literally, is our plumbing. Ever heard the aphorism, “all drains lead to the ocean”? It isn’t wrong.

And with every American homeowner’s inevitable plumbing problems, comes that all-too-familiar anxiety we all feel over having to find someone to repair a vital home system we take for granted 99% percent of the time. Apart from concerns about inviting a stranger into our home and whether this self-proclaimed pro is qualified to do the work we need done, consternation commonly comes from the question of being overcharged in our most vulnerable moment — when we feel like they’ve got us by the you-know-what.

That’s why HomeServe has taken the liberty of breaking down the average cost of repairs — both nationally and state by state — for some of the most common plumbing and drainage issues you’ll encounter. That way, when you pick up that phone to call for a plumber to fix, say, a clogged sink, backed-up shower drain or overflowing toilet, you’re going in armed with the confidence of knowing what you can generally expect to pay based on aggregated real-world data from HomeServe’s nationwide network of thousands of contractors.

Plumbing and Drainage Service Costs in Virginia

  • Diagnosis: $104

  • Repair or Replace: $305

Something to keep in mind is that plumbers (like many other types of service professionals) often charge a “callout” fee. Also referred to as a “diagnostic” fee, this is essentially how much it’s going to cost to get a plumber to drive to your home and look at your system. Even if they don’t find anything wrong, they will likely bill for this time. The average cost for this fee in Virginia, per HomeServe data, is $104. For comparison, the national average for diagnosis is $103.

Meanwhile, when you call a pro for an issue with your toilet, sink, toilet, shower or bathtub plumbing, the average cost in Virginia for a repair or replacement is $305, compared with the national average of $411. That figure is reflective of repair or replacement costs for the pipes and other components of your home’s plumbing system that bring freshwater for drinking and bathing into your house and to its various fixtures, and send wastewater out of your house for disposal and treatment.
