Everything seems to cost more and more these days, so when your septic tank’s drain field starts showing signs of trouble, it’s natural to worry about repair costs.

It can be expensive to repair a drain field, but if you understand the factors that drive costs, you’ll be better prepared.
What Is a Drain Field and Why Does It Matter?
A drain field, sometimes known as a leach field, safely filters and disperses wastewater from your home into the surrounding soil. If it’s functioning as it should, it prevents groundwater from becoming contaminated and ensures your septic tank operates efficiently.
Common Reasons for Leach Field Repairs
The first step in determining how much you might pay for repairs is to identify the drain field issue. Here are some common reasons yours may need attention.
Soil Compaction and Saturation
The soil in your drain field can become compacted or saturated over time, reducing its ability to absorb and filter wastewater. Signs to look out for include soggy areas in your yard, fixtures draining slowly and sewage backups. If resting the field to let it repair itself isn’t a practical option, you can expect to pay between $3,000 and $15,000 (CAD 4,093 and CAD 20,463) for a replacement, according to data from HomeGuide.
Tree Root Intrusion
Tree roots seek out moisture, which makes drain field pipes a target. The problem is particularly common with older systems or where mature trees are nearby. Repair costs can vary greatly, depending on the severity of the root intrusion and the number of affected pipes. Replacing septic lines typically costs between $40 and $180 (CAD 55 and CAD 246) per linear foot, while you may need to pay between $300 and $2,000 (CAD 410 and CAD 2,729) to remove the tree.
System Overload
A common cause of drain fields failing prematurely is homeowners consistently using more water than their septic systems are designed to handle. Solving this issue could mean enlarging the drain field. Expect to pay between $2.50 and $15 (CAD 3.42 and CAD 20.47) per cubic yard for the excavation costs and $40 to $180 (CAD 55 to CAD 246) per linear foot for the septic lines.
Bacterial Imbalance
If you have an underperforming leach field, you may be able to rejuvenate it rather than replace the lines. Rejuvenation involves injecting air into the soil to fracture it and allow bacteria to grow. You should expect to pay between $1,000 and $5,000 (CAD 1,354 and CAD 6,821) for this option.
Physical Damage
If you drive or park your vehicle over your drain field, you risk crushing the pipes and compacting the soil, increasing the risk of repairs. If the pipes are damaged, you should expect to pay rates similar to the costs for tree root intrusion as well as sod replacement, which averages $1 to $2 (CAD 1.36 to CAD 2.73) per square foot.
Clogged Drain Field Pipes
Over time, drain field pipes can become clogged with debris, resulting in poor performance and even complete system failure. To avoid this scenario, it’s worth investing in hydro-jetting. On average, the cost is between $250 and $800 (CAD 342 and CAD 1,092).

Factors Affecting Overall Septic Drain Field Repair Costs
Replacing a drain field can cost as little as $1,000 (CAD 1,354) but can also be as high as $20,000 (CAD 27,283). It all comes down to a bunch of personal factors we can’t replicate here. The most common ones that determine what you pay are:
System size and complexity
Location and accessibility
Local regulations and permit costs
Soil type and condition
System age
Seasonal factors, such as frozen ground
Drain field repairs aren’t a job for DIY enthusiasts. They're best left to the professionals because they involve dealing with permits and operating heavy field equipment. Also, local building codes may require a new perc (percolation) test, so if you don’t know exactly what you’re doing, your mistakes could be costly. However, dealing with the repairs in good time will be less costly than if you wait.
Finally, to minimize expensive repairs, use your septic system responsibly and maintain it regularly.
