If you’ve just moved into an older home—or even just looked behind your couch—you might’ve spotted a two-prong electrical outlet and thought, “Wait, is that supposed to be like that?” These unassuming outlets, lacking the familiar third hole for a ground prong, tend to raise eyebrows for a reason. They look outdated—and they are.

But the real question is: Are they actually safe? Let’s get into what two-prong outlets are, why they’re still around and whether it’s time to give your home’s electrical setup a 21st-century update.
2-Prong Vs. 3-Prong Outlets
It all comes down to grounding.
A two-prong outlet has only a “hot” and a “neutral” slot. That means electricity flows in and out, but there’s no dedicated path to safely carry stray voltage away from you and your appliances. That third prong on a modern outlet—the round one at the bottom—is called the ground, and it’s there to protect you from electric shock in case something goes wrong.
If a device with a metal casing (like a microwave or lamp) short-circuits and you're using a grounded (three-prong) outlet, the excess electricity has a place to go—safely into the earth. With a two-prong outlet, there's nowhere for that power to go but potentially into whatever’s touching it. That includes you.
Are 2-Prong Electrical Outlets Safe to Use?
The short answer: not really, not by today’s safety standards.
That doesn’t mean they’re going to electrocute you the second you plug in your toaster—but it does mean there’s a higher risk of electrical shock, equipment damage and even fire.
Two-prong outlets were standard in homes built before the 1960s, before electrical grounding became common practice. Back then, many appliances didn’t even have three-prong plugs. But today’s electronics—especially anything with sensitive circuits or metal cases—are designed to be used with grounding protection.
Here are some of the risks associated with the continued use of two-prong outlets:
Shock hazard: Without a ground, your body can become the path of least resistance if something goes wrong.
Fire risk: Faulty appliances or wiring may cause arcing or overheating inside the outlet box.
Surge damage: Ungrounded systems are more vulnerable to power surges, which can fry sensitive electronics.
Code violations: In many areas, ungrounded outlets in living spaces are no longer up to code, particularly in kitchens and bathrooms.
Why Are They Still in Use?
Two-prong outlets hang around because the wiring behind them hasn’t been updated. In older homes, especially those that haven’t undergone major renovations, the electrical system may still rely on outdated, ungrounded wiring. Swapping a two-prong outlet for a three-prong one without also updating the wiring behind the wall doesn’t solve the safety problem—in fact, it can make it worse by giving the illusion of protection that isn’t really there.
And no, these outlets are not being installed in new construction. Modern building codes require grounded outlets in virtually every part of the home. If you’re seeing new two-prong outlets, that’s a red flag—and a good reason to call an electrician.

In a word: yes. But it’s not as simple as just swapping the faceplate. If the wiring behind the wall is ungrounded (which it likely is), you’ve got two main options:
Rewire the Circuit
This is the gold standard. It involves running new, grounded wiring from your electrical panel to the outlets in question. It's the safest, most comprehensive fix—but also the most expensive and invasive, especially if you have plaster walls or tricky layouts.
Install GFCI Outlets
If rewiring isn’t in the budget, a licensed electrician can replace two-prong outlets with GFCI (ground fault circuit interrupter) versions. These look like standard three-prong outlets and will shut off the circuit if they detect a difference in current between hot and neutral wires—like when current leaks through you to the ground. Importantly, a GFCI doesn’t add grounding, but it does add protection against shock. For code compliance, the outlet must be labeled as “No Equipment Ground.” It's not a perfect fix, but it’s legal and much safer than sticking with the old two-prong configuration.
DIY Warning
Replacing an outlet faceplate might seem simple, but unless you know exactly what’s going on behind the wall, you could be creating a dangerous situation. Don’t just stick a three-prong outlet in a two-wire system. It looks modern but doesn’t offer real protection.
