How Does an Aerobic Septic System Work?

The aerobic septic system operates through several stages, each crucial to the effective treatment of wastewater. Here’s a step-by-step breakdown of how an aerobic septic system works:

Pre-Treatment Stage

Wastewater from the household flows into a pre-treatment tank, often a conventional septic tank. In this tank, heavier solids settle at the bottom, while lighter materials like grease and oils float to the top and create a kind of scum layer.

The pre-treatment stage allows for the initial separation of solid waste from the liquid, reducing the burden on the subsequent treatment stages.

Aeration Chamber

The partially treated wastewater from the pre-treatment tank then moves into the aeration chamber. This is the heart of the aerobic system.

An air compressor or blower pumps oxygen into the aeration chamber, creating an oxygen-rich environment. This oxygen is essential for the survival and activity of aerobic bacteria.

Aerobic bacteria break down the organic matter in the wastewater much more efficiently than anaerobic bacteria. The result is a significant reduction in pollutants and organic material.

Clarification/Disinfection Chamber

After the aeration chamber, in some systems, the wastewater flows into a clarification chamber. Here, any remaining solids or organic particles are allowed to settle out. And the aerated fluids will pass through a chlorinator or ultraviolet light to kill any remaining pathogens. This ensures that the effluent is safe for discharge or reuse.

Final Discharge

The treated and disinfected effluent is then discharged from the system. Depending on local regulations and the design of the system, this water can be released into a surface water body, absorbed into the soil, or used for irrigation purposes.
