What Does an Air Ionizer Do?

An air ionizer creates negative ions via electricity and emits those ions into the room. The negative ions, which have an extra electron, attach to positively charged particles. This can include smoke particles, bacteria, pollen or dust in the air. When this happens, the resulting bonded particles become heavy enough to fall through the air.

The heavier bonded particles land on the floor or in other locations, such as tabletops or furniture. They can be cleaned up easily with normal methods, such as dusting, wiping or mopping. This process allows these contaminants to be removed from the air, potentially leaving the air cleaner overall.

Is Ionized Air Good for You?

The fact that ionized air may be cleaner and free from particles like dust or smoke makes it better for you. However, there are also some indications that negative ionization may positively impact overall health, with the potential to improve sleep patterns, boost immune systems, reduce stress and decrease bacteria in the air.

What Are the Advantages of Air Ionizers?

In addition to the potential health benefits of ionized air, some advantages of air ionizers include:

  • Improved air quality. Negative ions work in the air to help remove unwanted particles. A room air ionizer can substantially cut down on microparticles that might cause symptoms associated with asthma or allergies, especially if you clean surfaces within that room often.

  • Odor reduction. Some of the molecules in the air that the negative ions bond with can cause odors in your room. When the negative ions react with those molecules, it may break down the existing particles and reduce the scent. And when those particles fall to the floor or other surfaces and are cleaned away, that also reduces odors.

  • Minimal maintenance requirements. Air ionizers don't require filter changes like air purifiers do, reducing the maintenance burdens and costs associated with running the ionization machines in your home. However, you may have to clean these devices periodically to ensure they perform well.

Before you purchase a home air ionizer or a fan ionizer for your room, make sure you consider any potential drawbacks to these devices. Some include:

  • Potential limited coverage. These devices tend to have fairly limited ranges, which means you may need to install multiple machines to cover a large room or your entire home. If you want to improve air quality in a large space with only one machine, you might want to look into whole-home air purifiers or filters instead.

  • Won't remove large debris. Air ionizers work on small molecules and particles. Negative ions don't tend to bond with visible debris and dust, including pet hair, so this isn't an option if you're struggling with that type of issue in your home. If you want to use a home ionizer to help with air quality in your room, you still need to vacuum, dust and take other actions to remove larger particles.

  • Ozone production. In some cases, air ionizers produce ozone. This byproduct of the ionizer process can cause respiratory irritation and be dangerous to individuals who suffer from respiratory issues.

It's also important to note that ionizers remove certain types of particles from the air by causing those molecules to fall out of the air. This doesn't remove the particles in question completely. If you want to trap pollutants and keep them out of your space, you may want to investigate air filter options instead.
