How Do Dimmer Switches Work?
Dimmer switches are light fixture additions that help control your light settings via remote control or wall switches. They work by controlling the level of electrical current that travels into your light fixtures. Dimmer switches are commonly used for overhead lighting and ceiling fan/light combos, and you can purchase plug-in dimmers and lamps with preinstalled dimming features.
While dimmer switches come in a variety of styles, including rotary, remote control, slide and push-button, they all share the same primary function. Adjusting the dimmer switch to a higher setting provides brighter light, while moving the switch to a lower setting creates softer, muted light. Dimming switches let you create your desired ambiance and help reduce energy costs when used on a low setting.
Here's a breakdown of some common dimmer switch styles:
Rotary. Rotary dimmer switches are attached to wall plates and feature knob-style switches. Rotary switches can make rooms brighter or dimmer when rotated to the right or left.
Remote control. Remote control dimmer switches send wireless signals to receivers that adjust light power. Sometimes called smart dimmer switches, remote control dimmers operate via radio frequency, Bluetooth, smartphones or voice controls.
Slide. Slide dimmer switches are attached to wall plates and feature user-friendly slide controls. To adjust lighting, users simply move the slide up or down.
Push-button. Push-button dimmer switches operate both regular lights and dimmed lights. For normal lighting, users press the button once. For dim or brighter light, users hold the button down until it reaches their light preference.
Are Dimmer Switches a Danger or Fire Hazard?
When used correctly, dimmer switches aren't generally considered dangerous or a fire hazard. However, issues such as faulty or damaged wiring or incompatible bulbs can increase safety risks. If the lighting connected to your dimmer switch begins to flicker, there may be overloaded circuits or loose wiring that should be addressed immediately.
In general, most dimmer switches are designed to withstand up to 1500 watts of electricity at once. If your dimmer only controls one lighting source, such as an overhead ceiling light or a stand-alone lamp, there should be enough electricity to go around. However, if your switch controls multiple lights that exceed 1500 watts, this can lead to overloaded circuits.
When operating, dimmer switches naturally create a small amount of heat. If your dimmer switch is working properly, its metal face and wall plate should absorb most of the heat. If your dimmer switch is malfunctioning, the wall plate may feel extremely hot.
A number of issues can trigger a hot switch, including loose or damaged wiring, degraded connections and overloaded circuits that exceed your home's electrical limitations. If you notice a hot dimmer switch, it's important to contact a professional electrician right away. Licensed electricians have the equipment and knowledge to safely assess your electrical system and perform the necessary repairs.

One of the easiest ways to avoid dimmer switch danger is to schedule an electrical inspection prior to installation. A skilled electrician can inspect your wiring and assist with installation to ensure your dimmer switch operates within the safe recommended temperatures. Electrical safety organizations state that dimmer switches should operate safely at or below 195 degrees Fahrenheit, with most systems operating at around 140 degrees Fahrenheit.
It's also extremely important to make sure the bulbs you use are compatible with your dimmer. If you use a non-dimmer bulb with a dimmer switch, this can potentially damage the bulb. Placing newer, light-emitting diode (LED) bulbs in older incandescent dimmer switches may also lead to bulb and/or dimmer switch damage. To ensure safe, efficient performance, use an LED-compatible or universal dimmer switch.
