Water is a powerful force. It can erode stone and concrete over time and seep into tiny cracks and fissures. Water seepage during cold weather months poses an even greater threat to foundations because ice expands as it solidifies.

As water freezes and swells, it can enlarge small defects in your foundation and allow moisture to penetrate even deeper. Besides the structural damage, this dampness can lead to pest infestations and unhealthy levels of mold spores in the air inside your home.

A water balloon offers a good illustration of the consequences of high hydrostatic pressure. The balloon swells to contain the water as you fill it. However, when the amount and weight of the water exceed what the balloon can handle, it bursts.

With your foundation, hydrostatic pressure is pushing against your home. Thankfully, your foundation won't burst outward dramatically, like the balloon under excessive water pressure, but it can easily crack inward from the strain.

In the worst cases, the walls of a basement or crawl space may bow or even buckle. Homes built into an incline are especially vulnerable and could have water flowing beneath the foundation. The resulting soil erosion can cause your house to shift and require costly foundation repairs.

What Are Signs Hydrostatic Pressure Is Too High?

Hydrostatic pressure issues are usually easy to locate by using your eyes and nose. To start, walk around your yard and look for mold or watermarks on your foundation, and then head inside.

Be on the lookout for peeling paint and water stains on your basement walls and floor. Another indication of trouble is rust forming on stored cans and metal shelving. Your living space shouldn't feel unusually humid, so it's important to track down any sources of moisture.

If you see mold or catch a whiff of a musty smell, contact a mold specialist to inspect and clean the affected area. Mold can be toxic and dangerous to remove without protective measures. While it's normal to have a certain amount in your home, chronic exposure can lead to health and respiratory issues.
