Suppose you have ten 60-watt incandescent bulbs on for five hours each day. That’s:

In contrast, the same number of LED bulbs running for the same time would use:

Now compare that to the LED setup: 0.45 kWh per day × $0.16 = $0.072 per day

The difference in energy cost between incandescent and LED bulbs over a year — just from ten lights — is around $147. That’s a compelling reason to not only turn lights off when you’re not using them, but also to switch to energy-efficient LEDs.

Even within the same lighting type, just reducing usage makes a measurable impact. For instance, turning off those same ten LED lights when you leave a room and cutting their use by one hour each day would save about $5.76 annually.
