If you find yourself having the boiler vs. furnace debate, the short answer is that both heating systems work well in cold climates.

However, traditional furnaces provide a drier type of heat, while boilers with radiators offer more humidity and tend to work better during extreme cold snaps than their forced air counterparts. What’s the Difference Between a Boiler (and Radiator Heat) and a Furnace?

While boilers with radiators and traditional gas furnaces both work to heat spaces during the colder seasons, it's important to understand the differences. Traditional furnaces use forced air heat, which means the heat is distributed through a home's ductwork and ventilation system. Furnaces are often installed as part of an HVAC system and use the same ductwork as air conditioners, and they're usually found in the basement or another out-of-the-way area in the home.

Radiators

Radiators use heated water provided by the home's boiler system to heat different rooms. You can install a radiator as a standalone unit, as baseboard units or as radiant flooring. But unlike furnaces, radiators must be installed in the same room they're heating. The average lifespan of a gas furnace is between 15 and 30 years, while a boiler typically lasts up to 15 years. Both radiators and furnaces work with thermostats, and radiators have knobs to control the temperatures in individual rooms.

Gas Furnaces

Gas furnaces operate on indoor and colder outdoor air, which can reduce the humidity levels in the home and make the indoor air feel dry. Some newer models are designed with humidifiers to replace lost moisture and provide more balanced heat. Alternatively, a boiler/radiator system adds natural moisture and humidity to the rooms it heats since it runs on hot water. With regular servicing, both traditional furnaces and radiators are easy to maintain. However, it can be a bit tricky to clean radiator elements, and the addition of a radiator cover may make the unit less efficient.

What Climates Are Furnaces Best For?

Traditional furnaces are used to heat homes in every type of climate. However, some HVAC professionals say furnaces work best in mild to cold climates. Traditional forced air furnace systems are capable of heating large rooms in short periods of time, and they take up less space than radiators and radiant baseboard heating.

One potential downfall of using a traditional furnace in extremely cold climates is heat distribution. With forced air systems, heat rises to the top of the room. This can leave your space feeling "cold around the edges," and your system may have to work harder to keep up with the dropping temperatures. When furnaces run around the clock, they're more prone to collecting dust and debris, which can also reduce efficiency.
