Why Is My Garage-Door Opener Struggling to Lift the Door?

Automatic garage doors are a convenience many people rely on. When you arrive home after a day at work, you expect to open and close your garage with the press of a button. Even if you don't have an automatic door, you still want a garage door that opens easily so you're not stuck troubleshooting it in the cold or rain.

So when your opener is struggling to lift your garage door ... you may feel like you're struggling, too.

Reasons Your Garage Door Is Having a Hard Time Opening

If your garage door won't open all the way, opens more slowly than normal or grinds and squeals when opening, it can indicate that something is broken, worn or otherwise in need of attention.

Broken Springs

Many garage door mechanisms rely on springs to help lift the door. When one or more springs in a garage door system are broken or damaged, the door may not open correctly or at all.

Tracks That Are Misaligned

Garage doors typically move via mechanisms that include wheels on tracks. If the tracks and wheels become misaligned, the garage door won't open all the way. You may also hear some grinding or other noises as you try to operate the door, indicating inappropriate parts of the door are rubbing against the track.

Broken or Worn Rollers

Rollers are what guide the door along the correct track when it's opening or closing. If rollers are worn down, broken or missing, the track mechanism can't operate appropriately.

Issues With Power

Automatic garage doors rely on electricity to move the door. If there's a short or another issue preventing power from making it to the door opening mechanism, it may not open at all. In some cases, your garage door may not have enough power to open fully, which can result in it getting stuck halfway up.

Debris of Items Blocking the Door

Leaves and dirt in the tracks or boxes or other items stored too near the door can block the garage door from opening. This is actually an important safety feature of many automatic garage doors, as they're designed not to close or open fully if something is in the way — otherwise, you might risk crushing or injuring a person or body part if the door closes on them.

Broken Cables

Cables may be used to lift the garage door. If they're damaged or broken, the garage door won't open completely. For example, if you notice that one side of your garage door seems to be opening while the other is stuck, you might have a broken cable on the stuck side.

Lack of Lubrication

Some garage door tracks require lubrication to ensure the rollers can move smoothly. If the track isn't appropriately lubricated, it might result in a garage door that sticks or is difficult to open.

What Are Some Ways to Make My Garage Door Open Easier?

Garage doors require some regular maintenance. Lubricate tracks periodically and inspect all the moving mechanisms to ensure they aren't clogged or blocked by debris or other items. Check that rollers, springs and cables are intact and working well. If an item is broken or too worn, you may need to replace it.

Homeowners can often handle basic garage door maintenance themselves. If you're going to clean or replace the parts of an automatic garage door, make sure to turn off the power to the unit to support safety.

Sometimes, a seemingly stuck garage door isn't stuck at all. Before you do any type of work on the door, make sure you double-check that your remote control is working. Replace the batteries and see if you can use it to open or close the garage door — if you have more than one remote control, make sure neither works before you assume something is wrong with the door itself.

Once you go through the basic checklist, replacing remote batteries, clearing away debris and checking for obvious broken parts, you may want to call in a garage door technician if the door still struggles to open or close. An experienced technician can inspect, repair or replace parts to get your garage door working again.
