Why Isn’t My Gas Oven Heating?

When a gas oven refuses to heat, it can feel personal. The stovetop works, the display lights up, you turn the knob and … nothing happens. Or worse, it sort of heats, but never gets hot enough to cook anything properly.

Gas ovens are fairly simple machines. So, the good news is that most heating problems come down to just a few culprits.

The Igniter Isn’t Working

This is the most common culprit by far. In a gas oven, the igniter has one job: glow hot enough to open the gas valve and ignite the gas. When it’s healthy, it glows bright orange or white-hot and draws enough current to trigger gas flow.

When it starts to fail, it may still glow red, but not hot enough. The oven looks like it’s trying to work, but the gas never ignites, so the oven won’t heat up at all. In other cases, it ignites intermittently or takes forever to reach temperature.

If your burners work but the oven doesn’t heat, the igniter is usually suspect number one. Replacing the igniter is a common repair and often restores full function immediately.

The Oven Temperature Sensor Is Out of Range

Every modern oven relies on a temperature sensor to tell the control board how hot things are inside. If that sensor is damaged, coated in grease or simply drifting out of calibration, the oven may heat incorrectly or shut itself down early.

This often shows up as an oven that turns on but never reaches the correct temperature or one that cycles on and off too aggressively. You might preheat to 350°F and stall out at 275°, no matter how long you wait.

A faulty sensor won’t always trigger an error code, which makes this problem feel mysterious. Fortunately, sensors are relatively inexpensive replacement parts.

The Oven Control Board Isn’t Sending a Signal

If your oven won’t turn on at all, even though power is present and the display works, the control board may not be sending voltage to the igniter or gas valve.

Control boards manage everything from setting the oven temperature to deciding when gas should flow. When they fail, the oven may appear normal from the outside while doing nothing internally.

This repair is more expensive than an igniter or sensor replacement, but still far cheaper than replacing the entire oven in many cases.

The Gas Safety Valve Is Defective

The gas safety valve opens only when it receives the correct signal from the igniter or control board. If it sticks closed or fails electrically, gas never reaches the burner.

This can look exactly like a bad igniter, which is why these two parts are often diagnosed together. A technician will usually test the current draw at the igniter to determine whether the valve is responding properly.

Gas valve issues are less common, but they do happen, especially in older ovens.

Sometimes the oven is heating, but it can’t hold the heat. A worn or damaged door gasket allows hot air to escape continuously, making it feel like the oven isn’t getting hot enough.

If you notice uneven baking, long preheat times or heat blasting your kitchen when the oven is on, check the door seal. If it’s brittle, torn or flattened, replacing it can dramatically improve performance. This issue is easy to overlook because the oven technically works, just badly.

The Oven Was Set Incorrectly

It sounds obvious, but it happens more than people like to admit. Some ovens have separate bake and broil burners, delayed-start settings or temperature offsets that can prevent normal heating.

If the oven won’t heat after cleaning or a power outage, double-check that it’s set to bake and not broil, warm or delay. Also make sure the oven isn’t in Sabbath mode or a demonstration setting. A quick reset — turning the oven off at the breaker for a minute — can sometimes clear strange behavior.

Loose Wiring or Connections

Ovens vibrate slightly over time, especially with frequent use. That can loosen wire connections to the igniter, sensor or control board. A loose connection can cause intermittent heating, random shutdowns or complete failure to ignite. This is more common in older units or ovens that have been moved recently.

While this is often a simple fix, it does require removing panels and working around gas components, so it’s usually a job for a pro.

You Need to Replace the Oven

Gas ovens typically last 15 to 20 years. As they age, multiple components can degrade at once, making repairs pile up. If your oven has already had several major repairs and now won’t heat up again, replacement may be the smarter long-term choice. Newer models are more energy-efficient, heat more evenly and offer better temperature control.

That said, a single failed igniter or sensor in an otherwise solid oven is usually worth fixing.
