  • Poor airflow

What Are the Potential Microclimates in My House?

  • Attics. Many attics have poor ventilation, which results in improper airflow. It’s also common for these spaces to lack a cooling source. This variable, along with the fact that heat rises, can result in high temperatures during the summer.

  • Near windows. Direct sunlight coming through windows can increase the temperature in a space, creating an oddly warm microclimate in an otherwise cold house. This is especially true for south-facing windows. Also, poorly sealed windows can let in moisture or cold or hot air, depending on the season, impacting temperature and humidity levels.

  • Corners. You may detect a noticeable temperature shift in certain corners of your home. This is often due to poor air circulation or cold walls from lack of insulation.

  • Closets. Poor air circulation in closets can result in temperature shifts or give the area a musky odor due to stagnant air flow.

To identify various home microclimates, you can use a thermometer to check temperatures and a hygrometer to determine the humidity levels in various spaces.
