You've recently changed the filters in the central HVAC system at home and discovered you have an HVAC with two filters. This might puzzle you, because AC technicians often say you shouldn't use more than one filter on the central air handler. Your question is, "Does my AC need two filters?", and it's a good one.

How Many HVAC Filters Do You Need?

Newer whole-home HVAC systems normally require only one filter placed in the return air duct to the air handler before the fan. Some older systems use two filters, and two filters may also be needed in exceptional circumstances.

Installing an air filter in ducted HVAC systems has two purposes. First, it prevents dust and debris from blocking or harming the AC condenser and furnace coils. Second, it removes dust and harmful pathogens to help maintain and improve the air quality in your home.

Without a filter, the air quality gradually deteriorates as the system circulates dust particles, mites, bacteria and other potentially harmful organisms around the home.

Why Are There Two Air Filter Slots in My HVAC System?

Your HVAC system may have two filter slots for several reasons. Some systems have two return air ducts. Dual air handlers might also require two filters, and if there's an allowance for dual inline filters, you can install two filters.

Systems With Double Return Ducts

In a larger installation, one air duct may be insufficient to properly distribute conditioned air throughout the building. Examples include large spread-out homes and homes with more than one floor. In these instances, there are likely to be multiple return lines to the air handler. You'll need an air filter installed in each return air duct.

Dual AC Systems

Some installations use dual AC systems. These are typically installations where the HVAC designer needs to separately control distinct parts of a building, such as a two-floor apartment building or multi-story family home. Separate AC systems offer greater flexibility and increased HVAC capacity for larger homes. Each air handler has a separate air filter.

Air Handler With Two Inline Filters

Some air handlers come with two filter slots. Often, these have different-size slots to accommodate two filter sizes such as a 4-inch filter and a 1-inch filter. This arrangement provides greater flexibility to the designer, who can choose the best size filter for the application. Most HVAC installations use only one filter, although installers sometimes use both slots to install two filters, one behind the other.

Two filters installed in series restrict the airflow more than a single filter. Although not normal, an HVAC with two filters in series is fine, provided the designer makes allowance for the increased back pressure caused by installing two filters in the air handler slots.

Two Filters Improve Filtration

The overall filtration using two filters in a series is better than that of a single filter. The first filter is usually a coarse filter to catch large dust particles, while the second filter removes tiny particles including mites and bacteria.

Designing for Two Series HVAC Filters

The designer must allow for the increased back pressure from two filters. Steps may include using a larger air box or a more powerful fan or installing larger air filters. As a rule, doubling the filter area reduces the back pressure by half, so two large filters in a series can have the same pressure drop as one smaller filter. However, airflow calculations are never precise, and the installer must measure the pressure drop across the filters to confirm it's within system specifications.

Do I Need Both a Furnace Filter and a Return Air Grille Filter?

If your system uses return air grille filters, then you don't normally need a furnace filter. Return air grille filters are commonly used when access to the HVAC air box is difficult.

Return air grille filters have several benefits. They're easy to replace, their back pressure is lower and their airflow capacity is better. The main weaknesses of return air grille filters are that they are numerous and may be more costly to replace, and a single missing or broken filter compromises your air quality.

Single or dual furnace filters are more reliable. Provided access is good, they're cheaper to replace, filter replacement is easier and blocked filters are easier to detect.

Some HVAC systems have two or, in some instances, more than two filters. There are pros and cons of multiple filter design and, in some cases, might be appropriate.
