What Is a Hydronic Heating System?

The clicking and gurgling of a radiator may be in the past, but radiant heat isn’t. Newer, more energy-efficient radiant systems can keep your home comfortably warm without emptying your wallet. One option, hydronic heat, uses hot water to provide consistent, uniform warmth throughout your house, making it a popular choice for today's homeowners.

What Is Hydronic Heating?
Hydronics uses hot water or another heated liquid to distribute heat throughout a space. The water travels through a series of tubes, transferring warmth to adjacent surfaces. This warmth radiates directly into the home, eliminating the need for forced air, which can be noisy and unevenly distributed.
These systems typically have several components:
Boilers to heat the water
Radiant tubing or pipes that distribute the heated water throughout the building
Heat distributors, such as radiators, baseboards and towel warmers, to transfer heat to people and objects
Compact heaters to warm hard-to-reach spaces
Water retains heat well, and hydronic heating systems are sealed to minimize heat loss, which makes them a highly efficient, cost-effective way to keep a building warm.
Types of Hydronic Heating Systems
Modern hydronic radiant heat systems can take several forms:
Boiler-based systems. Boiler-based hydronic systems rely on an electric or natural gas-powered boiler to heat the water that warms the home. Homeowners may opt for combi-boilers, which also provide hot water for faucets, showers and household appliances.
Hydro-furnaces. This type of system burns fuel in a sealed chamber to heat water. It then pumps the heated water through a heat-exchanger coil, which warms the air that travels through ductwork to heat the house.
Hydronic heat pumps. Heat-pump systems extract thermal energy from outside the home, even on cold days, and use it to heat water. The water is then pumped through a system of tubes to warm the house.
Hydronic air handlers. This system uses a boiler to heat water, which then circulates through the air handler. A heat exchanger transfers warmth to the air, which circulates through the building.
How Do Hydronic Heating Systems Work?
Methods of hydronic heating vary by type, but they all rely on the distribution of hot water. However, in many systems, heating starts with a boiler.
To generate warmth, the boiler heats water, which then circulates throughout the building via pipes or plastic tubing. These channels are hidden behind walls, ceilings or floors, and as the hot water flows through them, it transfers heat to adjacent surfaces, such as concrete slabs, baseboard radiator fins and wood panels or flooring.
These heated surfaces gently radiate this warmth in all directions, delivering uniform, consistent heating to the home and its occupants. As other objects become heated, they radiate this heat back out into the rooms. Some hydronic heating systems also use additional heat distributors for specific purposes, such as towel warmers.
Hydronic systems typically involve no forced air, so heat is distributed gently, eliminating the hot or cold spots commonly associated with traditional heating systems. However, some households may require fan-based compact heating units to warm hard-to-reach spaces, such as under staircases.

Some radiant flooring is hydronic, using heated fluid pumped through tubes under the floor to warm it. This heat radiates up and can be used to warm the whole house. However, some types are electric, with heat generated using coils or mats beneath the floor.
Is Hydronic Heat Right for You?
Hydronic heat provides consistent whole-home heat. The distribution channel is sealed, minimizing heat loss, so it's exceptionally energy-efficient. With hydronic heat, you can also divide your home into separate heating zones with individual thermostats so you can adjust the temperature to your family’s specific needs. Plus, most hydronic heating systems don't use forced air, so the heat is gentle, uniform and quiet.
On the flip side, hydronic systems can be expensive and time-consuming to install, sometimes needing major renovations or retrofits to accommodate extensive networks of tubing. For these reasons, hydronic systems are often better suited to new builds or households undergoing extensive structural renovations. However, their energy efficiency may save you money over the long haul.
