A bathroom fan is one of those little background features you don’t think about until it stops doing its job. You hit the switch, you hear a hum, and you assume it’s working. But sometimes that hum is deceiving. Your fan may be running without really pulling air, which means your bathroom is still filling with steam, moisture and eventually the problems that come with them — mold, mildew and peeling paint.

How a Bathroom Exhaust Fan Works
At its core, a bathroom exhaust fan is a simple device. It uses an electric motor to spin a set of blades or a squirrel cage fan inside the housing. When those blades rotate, they draw in warm, moist air from the bathroom and push it through ductwork that leads outside your home. The whole point is to keep humidity from lingering. If steam sticks around too long, it seeps into walls, ceilings and flooring, where it can cause warping, bubbling paint or mildew.
A good exhaust fan should do more than just clear the mirror after a hot shower. It helps control indoor air quality, prevents moisture damage and even keeps odors from hanging around. If you don’t have one, or if the one you’ve got isn’t functioning as it should, you’re putting your bathroom at risk of long-term damage.
How to Tell Whether Your Fan Is Actually Pulling Air
Hearing noise isn’t enough. Many fans get clogged with dust or lose efficiency over time. Here are a few simple tests you can do to see if your fan is moving air the way it should:
The tissue test: Hold a square of toilet paper or tissue up to the fan grille while it’s running. If the tissue sticks in place, your fan is pulling air. If it droops or falls, the suction isn’t strong enough.
The foggy mirror test: Take a hot shower with the fan running. A working fan should clear the fog from your mirror within about ten minutes afterward. If your mirror stays cloudy, that’s a red flag.
Check for airflow outside: Find the vent outlet on your home’s exterior wall or roof. With the fan running, you should feel air coming out. Weak airflow could mean a blocked duct, disconnected ductwork or a weak motor.
Listen closely: A grinding or rattling noise can mean a worn-out motor or loose parts. A fan that’s unusually quiet, on the other hand, may not be moving any air at all.
Troubleshooting a Bathroom Fan That’s Not Working Properly
If your fan fails these tests, it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s time for a replacement. A few basic troubleshooting steps can bring it back to life:
Clean the grille and fan blades: Dust buildup is the number one reason bathroom fans lose suction. Turn off the power at the breaker, remove the grille and clean it with soapy water. Use a vacuum with a brush attachment to gently clean the blades or squirrel cage inside.
Check the ductwork: A kinked, crushed or disconnected duct will keep the fan from venting properly. Go into the attic (if that’s where your duct runs) and make sure the duct is intact and leads outside. Sometimes ducts get clogged with lint, dust or even nesting critters.
Inspect the damper: Most fans have a backdraft damper that prevents outside air from blowing in when the fan isn’t on. If that damper is stuck shut, the fan won’t vent. Free it up if it’s stuck or warped.
Look at the motor: If the fan hums but the blades don’t spin, the motor may be seized. A replacement motor is often cheaper than replacing the entire unit, especially if your fan housing is built into the ceiling.
Upgrade if necessary: If your fan is undersized, no amount of cleaning will make it move enough air. Bathroom exhaust fans are rated in cubic feet per minute. A small bathroom needs at least 50 CFM, while larger bathrooms may require 80 CFM to 110 CFM or more. If your fan isn’t powerful enough, consider upgrading to a bigger unit.

If you’ve tried the basics and your fan still isn’t moving air, it may be time to bring in help. An electrician or HVAC technician can test the wiring, motor and ducting more thoroughly. They can also tell you if the fan wasn’t installed correctly in the first place.
Keeping Your Bathroom Exhaust Fan in Good Shape
Once your fan is working properly, make a habit of maintaining it. Dust and debris build up quickly, and a quick cleaning every six months will keep the suction strong. Also, run the fan for at least 15 to 20 minutes after every shower to ensure the bathroom is fully vented. Pairing the fan with a humidity-sensing switch makes this even easier, since it turns the fan on and off automatically based on moisture levels.
