Your Home's Natural-Gas System from End to End
A residential natural gas system contains these components:
Gas meter
Piping
Shutoff valves
Sediment traps
Gas-powered appliances
Appliance parts
The gas meter measures how much gas you use, so it's essential for determining accurate energy bills. Piping carries natural gas to your furnace, water heater or stove. A piping system usually includes a service line, a supply line and several branch lines. A natural-gas system also has vertical lines known as risers or drop lines. Here's why you need each one:
Service line. The service line is the main pipe. It carries natural gas from a supplier to your meter.
Supply line. The supply line, also known as the building line, carries natural gas from the meter into your home.
Branch lines. Think of branch lines like blood vessels. They branch off from the supply line, allowing you to power multiple appliances.
Risers/drop lines. These vertical pipes connect branch lines to individual appliances.
Shutoff valves allow utility workers or home service professionals to shut off the gas supply to your home. This is critical for safety, as it enables you to stop the flow of natural gas while you're dealing with a malfunctioning appliance. Shutoff valves also protect workers while they're performing maintenance on a residential natural gas system.
Finally, the sediment trap prevents dirt, rust particles and other types of debris from entering your home's natural-gas system. These particles can clog furnace, stove and water heater components, increasing the risk of fires. Clogs can also cause gas-powered appliances to break down prematurely. By preventing blockages, the sediment trap enhances safety and helps you save money on appliance repairs.
What Does a Gas Line Look Like Inside a House?
If you're like most people, you don't remember what your gas line looks like. That's because residential gas lines are pretty unobtrusive. They hang out in the background, producing heat you can use for everything from cooking a six-course meal to heating water for your toddler's bath. The appearance of a gas line depends on the type you have.
Many homes have a black pipe made of rigid steel. This line often runs along basement ceilings, joists or crawl spaces. Corrugated stainless steel (CSS) tubing is flexible, so it's common in newer homes. Look for a line that's black or yellow and flexible like a straw. CSS tubing has to be bonded to a residential electrical system to reduce the risk of gas leaks or explosions in the event of a power surge or lightning strike.
If you live in an older home, you might have a copper gas pipe. These pipes are usually narrower than rigid steel or CSS tubing. One of the benefits of copper piping is that it doesn't rust easily. However, it's expensive and more difficult to install.

Natural gas doesn't just appear out of nowhere; it may travel hundreds or thousands of miles to reach your furnace, water heater or stove. It all starts with underground wells, which are drilled in areas with natural gas reserves.
After cleaning and processing the gas extracted from their wells, energy companies use transmission pipelines to deliver it to utility companies around the country. Each company operates a distribution system that carries gas to the main under your street. Think of the gas main like a USB hub. Much like you can plug several electronics into a single hub, one main can deliver gas to many homes.
As explained earlier, the service line carries natural gas to your home. From there, your supply line, branch lines and drop lines do all the heavy lifting. This entire system is mostly hidden. You don't see the gas main under your street or the service line carrying natural gas to your home, so it's easy to underestimate the importance of natural gas in your daily life.
How Is Natural Gas Converted to Energy?
In its natural form, natural gas can't power anything. It has to be converted into energy, which requires combustion and heat transfer.
When natural gas reaches one of your appliances, it mixes with air. This causes it to combust, producing heat energy. Now your appliances can use that energy to meet your needs. If you want to heat your home, your furnace has to take heat from the combustion reaction and use it to heat a metal exchanger. Water heaters use a flame to warm the water in a tank or heat exchanger. Gas stoves produce a flame you can use to heat food directly.
At a global level, utility plants convert natural gas into energy by burning it. This powers turbines or produces steam, creating electricity for homes and businesses to use.
What Appliances or Systems Use Natural Gas?
It's common for stoves, water heaters and furnaces to use natural gas. Some homes also have gas dryers. Each model has a gas burner assembly to mix natural gas with air. A gas dryer also has an igniter that lights the burner, creating warm air to dry your clothing.
