Do Your Smoke Detectors Have an Expiration Date?

Fires spread quickly, and experts in the field say that you can have as little as two minutes to escape safely. An early warning can give you and your family the crucial time needed to get outside.

What About Carbon-Monoxide Detectors?

Carbon-monoxide detectors also rely on complicated internal sensors that naturally degrade with age. You should consult your device's user manual to see when the manufacturer recommends replacing the unit.

Many brands feature an end-of-life warning system that uses sound to get your attention. Plus, digital models may display error text. The signal differs between brands but usually comprises a specific pattern of slow beeps. Before using the detector, familiarize yourself with the user manual and learn the difference between sounds for the replacement, low battery and emergency alerts.

How Often Should You Replace Smoke Detectors?

Besides the 10-year rule, you should also immediately replace any units that appear damaged or don't sound when tested. If you aren't certain of the device's age, look for a manufacturer date on the back. If you can't confirm the age, replace it to be certain it continues working as intended.

You should also change out painted or decorated smoke detectors. Although you may prefer the appearance, the paint layer makes it difficult for the alarms to work correctly and could jeopardize your safety.

How Often Should You Test and Replace the Batteries?

Smoke detectors use photoelectric (light-detecting) and ionization (particle-detecting) sensors to detect fires. Age and pollutants interfere with the workings of these complex sensors and their batteries. Regular smoke detector testing ensures the devices will sound if needed and should be included in your home safety and fire prevention plans.

Smoke alarms need tested at least once a month. The easiest way to remember is to make it part of your routine. For example, you could test the units when you clean the house, on the first of every month or each week when you take out the trash.

Battery usage depends on individual makes and models. Some feature an irreplaceable 10-year battery that will last until the smoke detector's lifespan ends. For models with replaceable batteries, it's recommended you change them biannually. To help you remember, it's often proposed you swap out batteries when you adjust your clocks for daylight savings.
