How Much It Costs to Unclog a Drain — and 8 Other Plumbing Repair Prices

By Matt Schmitz and Lauren Leazenby

December 16, 2025

Unlike your go-to dry cleaner, that butcher who cuts your filets just the way you like ’em, or your favorite stylist at the salon who does your hair exactly right, the plumber who shows up to fix your pipes is likely a stranger you’re meeting for the first time. Homeowners don’t tend to call plumbers when it’s not absolutely necessary — and why would they when everything seems to be flowing as it should? But when something goes wrong with your plumbing — be it a sink that won’t drain, a backed-up shower or an overflowing toilet — you want it fixed fast and you want it fixed right.

Unfortunately, if you subscribe to the ol’ “good, fast, cheap — pick two” paradigm, that leaves you with a high likelihood that, whatever the repair bill winds up being when the plumber to whom you made an emergency call at 8 p.m. on a Saturday night hands it to you, cheap isn’t on the menu for the evening. Combine that with an anecdotal horror story of an acquaintance getting price gouged for a simple turn of the wrench here, a headline about plumbers making six-figure salaries there, and you’ve got a recipe for anxiety — and trepidation begets hesitation. But there’s no time for that! You’ve got a plumbing problem to fix!

That’s why HomeServe has taken the liberty of breaking down the average cost of repairs — both nationally and state by state — for some of the most common plumbing and drainage issues you’ll encounter. That way, when you pick up that phone to call for a plumber, you’re going in armed with the confidence of knowing what you can generally expect to pay based on aggregated real-world data from HomeServe’s nationwide network of thousands of contractors.

The prices below reflect repair costs as of December 2025, and are based on national figures. Costs in your community could be higher or lower, depending on a number of factors. This pricing does not necessarily reflect emergency repairs, which can often cost more due to services needed on short notice or after hours.

National Average Plumbing and Drainage Costs

  • Diagnosis: $103

  • Repair and Replacement: $411

Something to keep in mind is that plumbers (like many other types of service professionals) often charge a “callout” fee. Also referred to as a “diagnostic” fee, this is essentially how much it’s going to cost to get a plumber to drive to your home and look at your system. Even if they don’t find anything wrong, they will likely bill for this time. The average cost for this fee, per HomeServe data, is $103.

Meanwhile, when you call a pro for an issue with your toilet, sink, toilet, shower or bathtub plumbing, the national average cost of a repair or replacement is $411. That figure is reflective of repair or replacement costs for the pipes and other components of your home’s plumbing system that bring freshwater for drinking and bathing into your house and to its various fixtures, and send wastewater out of your house for disposal and treatment.

National Average Costs for Sink Repair

  • Diagnosis: $100

  • Repair and Replacement: $421

In addition to the “diagnosis” callout fee, the price to fix your sink depends on the part that's broken and whether you need to replace the broken parts outright. These are some of the most common sink plumbing and drainage parts that need to be repaired or replaced due to leaks, clogs and other issues:

  • Drain traps (P-traps)

  • Trap arms

  • Basket strainer drains

  • Angle stops (shutoff valves)

  • Supply lines

National Average Costs for Shower and Bathtub Repair

  • Diagnosis: $103

Coincidentally, the national average cost to repair or replace these shower and bathtub plumbing and drainage components is the same as the national average cost to do the same for your sink:

  • Drain traps

  • Supply lines

National Average Costs for Toilet Repair

  • Diagnosis: $105

  • Repair and Replacement: $390

This national average price includes repairs or replacements of these toilet plumbing and drainage components:

  • Flange

  • Wax ring

  • Bolt set

  • Angle stop

  • Supply line
