What Are the Pros of Heat Pump Water Heaters?
Energy Efficiency
The most compelling reason to choose this type of water heater is its heat pump efficiency. According to the Department of Energy, these systems can be two to three times more energy-efficient than conventional electric resistance water heaters.
This efficiency can translate into real savings. ENERGY STAR estimates a household of four can save approximately $550 (CAD 771) per year on electric bills compared to operating a standard electric water heater, with lifetime savings exceeding $5,600 (CAD 7,853).
Lower Environmental Impact
If you're concerned about your carbon footprint, heat pump water heaters can offer appreciable environmental benefits. Research shows heat pump water heaters produce only 519 kilograms of carbon dioxide equivalent annually, compared to 1,433 kilograms for a gas tank water heater. Water heating accounts for roughly 18% of residential energy use, so switching to an efficient heat pump system can meaningfully reduce your home's environmental impact.
Extended Lifespan
Heat pump water heaters typically last 13 to 15 years, compared to 8 to 12 years for conventional electric water heaters. This longer lifespan means fewer replacements over time and a better return on your investment.

Higher Up-Front and Installation Costs
The primary disadvantage of a heat pump water heater is the initial cost. Expect to pay installers between $1,500 and $3,000 (CAD 2,103 and CAD 4,207) for a heat pump water heater, including installation, compared to $500 to $1,000 (CAD 701 to CAD 1,402) for a conventional electric model. However, with the annual energy savings, a family of four could recoup the extra cost in about 3 years.
Space Requirements
Heat pump water heaters need adequate space to operate efficiently. At least 700 cubic feet of space around the water heater — roughly equivalent to a 10-foot by 10-foot utility room with a 7-foot ceiling — is recommended. They won't work well in small closets or confined spaces. Additionally, these units are often taller than traditional tank water heaters because the heat pump sits on top of the storage tank.
Climate Considerations
While heat pump water heaters work in temperatures as low as 40 degrees Fahrenheit (4 degrees Celsius), their efficiency decreases in colder environments. They perform best in warmer spaces, so installing them in a room with excess heat, such as a furnace room, can actually boost performance. In cold climates, the backup electric elements will activate more frequently, potentially reducing overall energy savings.
Cooling Effect
As these systems extract heat from the air, they cool and dehumidify the surrounding space. On average, heat pump water heaters reduce room temperature by about 2.3 degrees Fahrenheit (-16.5 degrees Celsius), which most homeowners don't even notice. The energy savings may offset any slight increase in winter heating costs.
