Refrigerator squealing noises can be jarring, especially if they seem to start out of nowhere. In many cases, these sounds are triggered by fixable issues, such as ice buildup or dirty condenser coils. However, if your refrigerator continues to shriek after a thorough cleaning, you may be dealing with a damaged part, a failing motor or another more serious issue.

Why Is My Refrigerator Squealing and Making a High-Pitched Noise?

From excessive ice buildup to old, worn-out components, many potential issues can cause refrigerator squealing sounds. Here are some of the most common culprits.

Ice Buildup in the Freezer

When ice builds up in the back of your freezer, it can lead to blockages in the condenser fan. This hinders the fan's movement, causing the blades to push against the ice and make refrigerator squealing noises.

If your noisy fridge is due to an ice buildup, you can potentially fix the issue by defrosting your freezer. Many modern freezers are designed with automatic defrosting features, but older units typically require manual defrosting.

To manually defrost your freezer, start by unplugging the refrigerator. Leave the refrigerator door closed and remove all items from the freezer portion. In most cases, the ice in the freezer should melt within 15 minutes or so. Remove large chunks of ice as the buildup starts to melt, and be sure to have towels handy to soak up excess moisture.

If your refrigerator continues to squeal after the defrosting process, it's probably time to schedule a service call with a refrigerator repair person. If your refrigerator/freezer has automatic defrost features but still experiences ice buildup, a component may be damaged or another issue may need to be addressed.

Dirty Condenser Coils

Dirty condenser coils are another common issue that can cause your refrigerator to make noise. Condenser coils are responsible for absorbing the heat that's pulled from your refrigerator by the condenser fan. The coils are typically located behind or below your fridge, and they can easily pick up dust and debris. Dirty coils can sometimes block airflow, leading to high-pitched squealing sounds.

In most cases, dirty condenser coils are easy to clean in a DIY fashion. Reference your user manual to locate the coils, and unplug the fridge. Use a vacuum hose to gently remove built-up dust and debris. You can also remove stuck-on debris with warm water and mild liquid soap. Just make sure the coils are thoroughly clean and dry before plugging in your refrigerator. If the squealing noise persists, call a professional repair person to inspect your fridge and determine the underlying issue.

Damaged Capacitor

The capacitor stores and releases the energy that powers your refrigerator's motor. Over time, normal wear and tear can affect the capacitor's speed functions, resulting in squealing noises. Because capacitors are a major component of refrigerators and work in conjunction with the main motherboard, it's always best to schedule professional repair service if you suspect an issue.

Broken Compressor

Compressors are motorized pumps that circulate refrigerant and create the cold temperatures that keep your refrigerated items cool and fresh. When the compressor's internal components, such as bearings and seals, become worn down over time, they can create high-pitched noises as the refrigerator runs.

Broken compressors should always be replaced by a professional to ensure proper installation. If the compressor is heavily damaged or your technician detects any additional issues, they may recommend a full refrigerator replacement.

Fridge Drain Pan Issues

A refrigerator drain pan sits beneath the unit, and it's responsible for catching condensation when it flows from the defrost drain. If you hear a squealing or scraping noise coming from the bottom of the refrigerator, the pan may have come loose from compressor vibrations, or it may not be level with the floor.

If the drain pan is loose, you may be able to temporarily fix the issue by securing the pan to the refrigerator frame with heavy-duty heat-resistant tape. If the pan isn't level, sliding a piece of cardboard beneath the pan may resolve the problem. Additionally, loose seals can cause warm air to make its way into your refrigerator and increase the risk of food spoilage. Misaligned gaskets can also cause energy loss that may lead to increased electric bills.

Misaligned rubber seals with kinked or indented areas can often be fixed by applying gentle heat and reshaping. Set a hair dryer to the lowest setting and apply warm air until the gasket is soft to the touch. Next, press the gasket back in place against the door frame. Use duct tape to tape the refrigerator door shut, and allow the gasket to set. For best results, keep the door taped overnight. If the seal is still loose after the heating and reshaping process, it may require replacement.
