Your to-do list as a homeowner is long, with tasks ranging from cleaning the gutters to replacing the HVAC filter. And when you've finally checked off every item, it's practically time to start all over again. It might make you wonder if you really need to do all those chores.

When you fit a new filter, it may not seem like much, but it's essential for keeping your heating and cooling system running. Before you think about ditching the air filter, make sure you understand the effects of running an HVAC system without a filter.
Does an HVAC Unit Need an Air Filter?
Yes, your HVAC system needs an air filter to operate properly. Air circulates constantly through your HVAC system while it's running. It goes from the air handler to all the rooms in your house and back to the main unit through the air return vents. During the air circulation process, the filter removes any debris and particles that flow with the air. That often includes dust, pet dander and pollen, among other airborne contaminants. Not only does it help keep your indoor air clean, but it also keeps that debris from entering the HVAC equipment, where it can cause damage.
How Long Can You Run Your HVAC Without a Filter?
Ideally, you don't want to run the HVAC without a filter for any amount of time. But what happens if you throw away your old filter only to realize you don't have a replacement on hand? You can usually run the system for a short time without any long-term effects. Running an HVAC system without a filter for longer than 6 to 8 hours could cause problems, though.
Extensive periods without a filter create various problems inside the system. You'll likely notice a decrease in the performance. Eventually, your furnace or AC could shut down completely because of the damage caused by not using a filter. How long that takes depends on the situation, but don't take the risk for longer than a few hours and only if necessary.

What Happens If You Run Your HVAC Without a Filter?
Running an HVAC system without a filter can have lots of negative effects, including some costly damages. Going too long without a filter could cause:
Frozen coils: If you have no filter in an AC unit, the coils could freeze. Restricted airflow can keep too much cold air in the unit, causing ice to form on the coils. Frozen coils usually make warm air come out of your vents and could cause permanent damage.
Poor air quality: Without an air filter to remove particles from the air, you have more pollutants circulating in your home. This could cause irritation, especially for people who have allergies.
Restricted airflow: More debris circulating through the system can cause buildup that restricts airflow. Not only does this affect how well it heats or cools your home, but it could also cause the unit to overheat and stop working.
Increased wear: Your equipment has to work harder to heat and cool your home properly without a filter. That often wears out the parts faster, shortening the life of your system or forcing you to replace parts prematurely.
Permanent damage: Over time, operating the equipment without a filter could cause parts to fail. The compressor often fails in these situations. Repairing the damage can be expensive.
Higher costs: Many of these issues combined result in higher utility bills because they make the system less efficient. Spending money on HVAC filters could be cheaper than the increased energy costs and potentially expensive repairs.
Running an HVAC system without a filter is risky, but so is running one with a dirty, clogged filter. Many of the same issues can happen if you don't change your filter regularly. Check your filter methodically to make sure it's not dirty. How often you need to change the filter depends on several factors, including the type of filter you have and how many particles you have in your air.
