Before explaining what a self-cleaning water heater is, let's recap how a dip tube works. All water heaters, self-cleaning or not, have a dip tube that delivers cold water to the bottom of the tank where the heating element sits. Without a dip tube, incoming cold water would cool the hot water at the top of the tank, preventing even heat distribution.

A self-cleaning water heater has a curved dip tube that swirls the water around instead of delivering it all to the same spot. In a regular water heater, sediment often accumulates at the bottom of the tank. This means that the tank requires regular draining to remove the sediment and prevent it from causing efficiency issues and corrosion. Swirling the water stops sediment from accumulating as quickly, reducing the need for tank draining.

Why Is Sediment a Problem?

However, self-cleaning water heaters also come with drawbacks. Agitating the water moves sediment from the tank to your hot water pipes. Because of the sediment present, it is advised not to drink warm or hot water that has been through a self-cleaning water heater.

The primary drawback of self-cleaning water heaters is that they cost more than regular water heaters. However, you may save enough in maintenance, repair and replacement bills to cover the price difference over the heater's lifetime, especially if you maintain it regularly.

Do You Still Need to Flush a Self-Cleaning Water Heater?

While self-cleaning water heaters require less maintenance than their traditional counterparts, they aren't maintenance-free. You'll still need to replace the anode rod and flush the system occasionally to keep your water heater in good condition.
