What Is Static Pressure in Ductwork?
Static pressure describes the amount of resistance to the airflow within your system's ductwork. Your system needs an ideal balance of static pressure to work properly. If the static pressure is outside the normal range, it can cause damage to your HVAC unit, poor airflow to rooms and leaks in your ductwork. You might also notice that your system is louder when it runs.
What Is a Good Static Pressure in HVAC?
The measurement for static pressure in HVAC systems is a unit called inches of water column (in. WC). An ideal measurement is 0.5 inches of water column. A higher number indicates increased pressure in the ductwork. Your HVAC system can typically handle a static pressure slightly higher than 0.5 in. WC, but as it increases, the risk of problems also rises. Maintaining good static pressure helps maximize your system with fewer performance issues.
How Do You Determine HVAC Static Pressure?
HVAC pros use a device called a manometer to measure static pressure. They drill test ports into your ductwork and insert probes into the ducts. Those probes read the static pressure inside the pipes.
What Happens When Static Pressure Is Too High?
High static pressure in HVAC systems can happen if you have an oversized unit or undersized ductwork. It can also happen if you close the vents in certain rooms. The air from those rooms backs up into the ductwork, increasing the static pressure.
Increased static pressure creates more resistance within the ductwork. This forces the heating and cooling equipment to work harder to overcome the resistance. As your system works harder, it puts more strain on key components. That could result in increased repair needs for your system.
High static pressure causes several other issues, including:
Noisy operation from the system working harder
Duct leaks caused by the increased pressure
Decreased energy efficiency, leading to higher bills
Inconsistent temperatures between rooms
Can HVAC Static Pressure Be Too Low?
Yes, your air duct static pressure can also be too low, although it's not as common as having high static pressure. Low static pressure could happen if the ductwork is oversized or there are leaks in the ducts. When the static pressure is low, the system can't move the air efficiently, which could cause uneven temperatures. You might also notice higher utility bills as the system works harder to try to increase the pressure. That extra work may cause premature wear on some HVAC components.

How you fix high static pressure depends on the reason for it. For many homeowners, calling an HVAC company is the best way to determine the root cause. If the issue is incorrect sizing of your HVAC equipment or ductwork, you may need to replace the components. Work with a reputable HVAC company to determine whether everything is correctly sized before you decide to replace your heating and cooling system.
Other possible fixes include:
Opening vents: Leave the vents open in every room to help maintain proper static pressure. Dampers in the ductwork are a safer way to limit airflow to rooms you don't use.
Adding dampers: If your system doesn't already have dampers, adding them can help maintain proper airflow through the system.
Changing the filter: A clogged air filter restricts airflow through your HVAC system, which changes the static pressure. Change your filter if it's dirty, and get in the habit of checking it regularly.
Fixing leaky ductwork: Leaks in your ductwork let air escape, which can lower the static pressure. They also cause wasted energy since the treated air escapes before it reaches the rooms in your home. Find and seal the leaks to improve the system.
Changing the ductwork design: Even if the ductwork is properly sized, the design could cause issues. Sharp turns or lots of bends in the ducts can slow the air and increase resistance. Having a professional redesign your ductwork to eliminate or soften the turns could help.
Installing a booster fan: This addition helps push the air through the ductwork.
