Clink, clink, clink. It's a familiar sound when you're dispensing ice from your built-in ice maker. Who doesn't love a perfectly chilled drink with crystal clear ice cubes to keep that drink cool and delicious? Unfortunately, some ice makers produce ice that's smaller than normal or even cloudy in appearance. Even if the visual differences don't affect the flavor of the ice, they just don't look right. And sometimes, those changes indicate a problem with your ice maker.

From impure water to restricted water flow, ice maker troubleshooting requires you to consider many issues. Here are some common causes of small or cloudy ice cubes.
Impurities Trapped in the Ice
The quality of your ice and the way the ice freezes within the machine can result in cloudiness. Water naturally has some impurities in it, which can vary by area. For example, if your area has hard water, there are lots of dissolved minerals in it. While ice makers built into a refrigerator typically use water that runs through a filter, it's still possible for there to be a large amount of impurities in the water. When the water freezes, the impurities can cause the cloudy look.
To remedy this, make sure the water filter in the refrigerator is in good condition. You can also install whole-house water purifying or water softening systems. This helps remove those dissolved particles as the water comes into your home, making the water purer throughout your home.
Air Frozen Inside the Ice
Air can also get stuck inside your ice cubes and cause a cloudy appearance. It can happen when your ice cubes freeze quickly or unevenly. Fast freezing is often a problem in home ice makers. As the water freezes, the outside of the cube solidifies first. Any air bubbles in the middle get trapped as the water freezes around them. Air bubbles are less of an issue in ice makers with a slower freezing process that happens in one direction rather than from all sides.
This issue is difficult to remedy since it's related to how your ice maker works. Some built-in refrigerator ice makers have an option for fast-freezing ice. Check for that setting, and turn it off to avoid that fast, uneven freezing.
Poor Cleaning Habits
If you never clean your ice maker, it's possible for bacteria and debris to build up inside of it. The lines could also have scale buildup that affects the water quality and pressure. All of that gunk can affect how the ice looks, smells and tastes.
The easy fix for this is to clean your ice maker regularly. Cleaning it every six months should keep it in good shape and avoid any impact on the ice. To clean it, shut the machine off and remove the ice. Then, you can wipe down all of the surfaces. Make sure everything is dry before putting the ice back in the bin.
The bin could be part of the issue, too. Regularly clean the ice maker bin to ensure impurities aren't sticking to or melting ice cubes that have already been made.

If the ice maker water filter is old and clogged, it can limit the amount of water that goes into the ice maker. In some cases, not enough water passes through the water filter, so the resulting ice cubes turn out smaller. Changing the water filter should clear up the problems that affect ice quality.
Water Supply Issues
Besides the water filter, other things could restrict water flow into the machine, resulting in tiny ice maker cubes. For example, if the water supply line leading to the refrigerator gets pinched or twisted, it can slow the water flow and make it difficult for the machine to fill the ice compartment fully. There could also be issues in other places in the water supply line that minimize how much water reaches the ice maker.
Pull out the refrigerator carefully to make sure the water supply line is in good condition. You may need to call a plumber to check the plumbing system and water supply to determine if there are larger supply issues that are restricting the flow.
Freezer Temperature Fluctuations
Inconsistent or fluctuating temperatures around the ice maker affect how the water freezes. As we already established, inconsistent freezing contributes to cloudiness. For a built-in ice maker, those temperature fluctuations can occur if the freezer isn't ventilated properly, the sensors aren't correct or the seal isn't tight. Countertop ice makers could suffer if they're placed in a hot area or in a space where the temps swing significantly.
To prevent this issue and get clear ice cubes, avoid overloading the freezer or blocking the vents, which limit airflow. Check the seal on the door, and replace it if necessary to make sure it's tight all around the door. You can also place a thermometer in the freezer to check the temperature and watch for swings. If you can't correct the temperature issues after performing ice maker troubleshooting, you may need an appliance repair service technician to diagnose the problem and perform ice maker repairs.
