What's a Variable-Speed HVAC System?

You may have heard about variable-speed HVAC systems and wondered what all the fuss is about. After all, your HVAC system controls the temperature in your house, so why do you need a variable-speed AC? The reality is that variable-speed technology is more efficient, saves on energy costs and provides more precise temperature control in your home.

How Does a Variable-Speed HVAC System Work?
Unlike standard HVAC systems, variable-speed AC units use a frequency inverter to automatically adjust the speed of the AC compressor. Instead of switching the compressor off when the thermostat senses that the home has reached the set temperature, a variable-speed system reduces the speed of the compressor so the AC produces just enough cooling to maintain the temperature in the home.
Variable-speed HVAC systems don't continually switch on and off like standard HVAC units, so the temperature in the home is more stable, and you don't experience cold drafts every time the AC cycles.
Types of Variable-Speed HVAC Systems
The concept of variable speed applies to both heating and cooling. While usually used to refer to air conditioning, similar technologies help smooth out the temperature control of gas furnace heating systems by controlling the speed of the air blower.
Central Air With a Variable-Speed Blower
Homes with ducted HVAC have an air handler with a blower that drives hot or cool air through air filters into the air ducts. Conventional blowers have only one speed, while variable-speed blowers can adjust their speed to precisely control the flow of air into the home.
Variable-Speed Air Conditioner
A variable-speed air conditioner adjusts the speed of the compressor to control the amount of cool air it produces. The same applies to variable-speed heat pumps.
How Does Variable-Speed Differ From Single- and Two-Stage Systems?
Standard HVAC systems are commonly single-stage or two-stage systems. However, their operation differs from that of variable-speed systems.
Single-Stage System
A single-stage HVAC system is the simplest and most basic type available. It's either on or off. In cooling mode, the AC runs at 100% (full load) until the temperature in the home reaches the thermostat set point. The unit then switches off until the thermostat cycles, when it starts up again. The same concept applies to a gas furnace, which cycles on and off according to the room temperature. With single-stage systems, you can expect the room temperature to vary over a few degrees as the HVAC system cycles.
Two-Stage Systems
A two-stage system has two operating modes: low and full power. This is usually determined by the blower speed in the air handler, which typically runs at 65% and 100% of maximum speed. This arrangement provides for smoother temperature control with less temperature variation in the house.
Variable-Speed Systems
A variable-speed air handler continually adjusts its speed to keep an almost constant air temperature in the home.

Disadvantages of Variable-Speed AC
Disadvantages of a variable-speed HVAC system include:
Higher up-front cost: The first cost of a variable-speed HVAC installation is significantly higher, but running costs are lower.
Increased complexity: Although inherently reliable, HVAC inverter control systems are more complex, and repairs may cost more.
