How Do All-in-One Washer-Dryer Combos Work?

These home appliances can handle both the washing and drying based on the cycle options that you choose. They wash the clothes in the same manner as a front-load washing machine, and come in vent or ventless models for drying. They have cycle options that can wash and dry the clothes without you needing to do anything after they finish the initial washing. However, most do offer the option of choosing a wash-only cycle or a dry-only cycle.

It’s important to note that these all-in-one models are different than stackable units. Stackable units refer to washers and dryers that can be stacked on top of one another, with each unit still handling its own specific function. Stackable appliances still save you horizontal space since they only take up space vertically.

Pros of Washer-Dryer Combos

One of the major advantages is their space-saving features. If you have a small laundry room, live in an apartment, or just want to maximize your space in the basement, these appliances are a good investment. For even more convenience and flexibility in placement, consider a ventless unit that doesn’t require you to run a vent to the outside. You’ll just need to pay slightly more, but it’s worth it if you have a specific place you want it in.

Apart from space, there is also the factor of time-saving. You don’t have to constantly switch the laundry when it’s done washing. You just need to add your softener and detergent, and then simply take it out once it’s done washing and drying. It’s ideal if you want to leave your home for a couple of hours or even leave it overnight, as some units even have a wrinkle prevention feature.

Cons of Washer-Dryer Combos

While they save space in terms of area, this also means the load sizes that fit are often smaller than those you would put in standalone units. So you’ll need to run the washer and dryer combo more often if you have a lot of laundry to wash.

The cycles also take a lot longer. Since these units are not as strong as a single washer or a single dryer, a single cycle can often take anywhere from 2 hours to 5 hours or more. While other appliances have one job, they have two, which means they’re performance won’t match that of a unit that only has to do one thing.

Vented Vs. Ventless: Washer-Dryer Combos

Similar to how single dryers can be vented or ventless, the same applies to these washer-dryer combos. For vented units, you’ll need an exhaust vent that goes to the outside. Vented dryers use warm air to heat up your clothes and then push the humid air out through the vent to the outside. Ventless units use technology that recycles the warm air and removes the moisture from it instead of pushing it out.

Ventless units are often used in apartments because most don’t have an exhaust vent setup, or in rooms where there isn’t space or openings for an exhaust vent. These units also don’t make a lot of noise and require fewer maintenance since you don’t need to constantly clean the duct.

Vented washer-dryer combos offer much faster drying times than ventless options. They also aren’t as costly if budget is a concern for you. Their drawback is that you do need to have an opening for the exhaust vent to release air to the outside, along with space for the vent to go from the dryer to the opening. You will also need to routinely clean the vent at least once every six months.
