A home water conditioner has a similar purpose, but it works differently than hair products. Like hair conditioner, your home's water conditioner system may give you softer hair, but it's not a water softener (more on that later).

What Does a Home Water Conditioner Do?

Homeowners often believe water purifiers, water softeners and water conditioners are the same. However, there are some key differences between these popular home water treatments.

As the name suggests, a water conditioner helps condition your home's water. A whole house water conditioner typically changes the structure of minerals in your water instead of removing them. This is known as conditioning the water and is often confused with water softening. Conditioning water helps treat some of the problems caused by hard water, but it doesn't eliminate hard water.

Water softeners and water purifiers remove hard minerals instead of simply changing their chemical compositions. However, a water conditioner can remove some contaminants, even though it doesn't remove hard minerals. Water conditioners, water purifiers and water softeners all work well on tap water. You may prefer a water softener if you have well water, as using a water conditioner for well water is typically not an option.

How Does a Water Conditioner Work?

Think of water conditioning like setting boundaries with an unpleasant coworker. Neither of you are leaving the company, but you've changed how interactions occur. When you condition your water, you aren't removing minerals or the water itself. Instead, you're altering the structure of minerals in your water system. This restructuring process commonly occurs via template-assisted crystallization media, often called TAC media.

TAC media relies on tiny resin beads that transform hard minerals, such as calcium and magnesium, into a stable crystalline form. It's like a fly trap but for hard minerals instead of bugs. Once minerals get captured, the TAC media turns them into nanometer-sized crystals known as seed crystals. These seed crystals are then released back into your plumbing system.

Some hard mineral ions may not get turned into seed crystals, but that's okay. The ones that do become tiny crystals help prevent limescale from developing in your pipes. Your home's water may still be hard after this process, but it won't stick to pipes or sinks as easily.

Electronic water conditioners are another option if you're interested in conditioning your home's water. When you use an electronic water conditioning system, you'll have coils or magnets around the water line that enters your home. This creates a magnetic field that disrupts the composition of hard minerals, altering their chemical structure.

Some home water conditioners also have other advantages. Water conditioners often focus on restructuring minerals rather than removing them, but some contaminants may still get removed. A water conditioning system may remove volatile organic compounds, which are found in many personal care products and cleaning supplies. You may also have success eliminating contaminants such as chlorine, lead and chloramines.

Maintenance costs are minimal for water conditioning systems, so your utility bills shouldn't increase much.
