What Is an Evaporative Swamp Cooler?
Swamp coolers cool your space as effectively as a standard AC, but instead of recirculating indoor air, they pull warm air in from the outside. The air passes through the cooler and evaporates, resulting in cool indoor air. Also known as evaporative coolers, these small but mighty machines are cost-effective and use approximately one-quarter of the energy used by traditional air conditioners.
Parts of a Swamp Cooler
These are the main parts of a swamp cooler unit:
Outer Casing
Crafted from galvanized steel or sturdy plastic, the outer casing of a swamp cooler houses the internal components and protects them from dust and damage.
Motor Assembly and Fan
The motor assembly serves as the swamp cooler's main power source. The internal fan is responsible for pulling in warm air and circulating it through the machine and into your home.
Water Distribution System
The swamp cooler's water distribution system consists of a water reservoir, float valves and a pump. These components work together to supply water to the unit's cooling pads.
Cooling Pads
Made with synthetic or cellulose materials, the unit's cooling pads are saturated with water provided by the water distribution system. When warm air passes over the cooling pads, it evaporates and creates cool air, which is then pushed out via the fan.
Dampers and Louvers
The swamp cooler's dampers are responsible for regulating air flow, while the louvers work to vent the cold air into the home.
Control System
Serving as the swamp cooler's central hub, the control system includes a control panel, fan speed controls and a thermostat. Together, these components control the unit's power, airflow and preset temperature controls.
Swamp Coolers Vs. Traditional Air Conditioners
While producing cool air is the primary function of both swamp coolers and traditional air conditioners, there are several differences between these two cooling systems. An air conditioner works by blowing cool air into a space, while a swamp cooler evaporates warm air to create a cooling effect.
Both systems use large fans to circulate incoming air, but their cooling mechanisms are different. Air conditioners use chemical refrigerant when cooling air, while swamp coolers use saturated cooling pads. While swamp coolers work best in warm, dry environments, air conditioners are suitable for all climates. Since evaporative coolers don't use chemicals, they're considered more environmentally friendly than traditional air conditioners.

How Does a Swamp Cooler Work?
When you run an evaporative cooler, it pulls warm air inside its housing via an interior fan. The warm air then passes over the cooling pads. This causes the water in the cooling pads to evaporate, lowering the air temperature by as much as 40 degrees. The fan then pushes the cooler air into the home.
Evaporative coolers are installed in two different ways. Similar to an air conditioner, swamp coolers can be connected to a home's ductwork and blow cold air into multiple rooms. They can also be installed so the cooler blows air into a single location. Central-location installations are recommended for smaller homes and compact spaces, while ductwork installations are a good option for larger homes with multiple rooms.
When you operate a swamp cooler, the windows in your home should remain partially open so the system can pull in warm air from the outside. Evaporative coolers can be installed on roofs or mounted in the ground, and you can also opt for a smaller window unit.
Window Swamp Coolers
Window units only cool one room or one section of a home and can lower room temperatures by up to 15 degrees. Modern swamp coolers are typically designed with vent-only features. When switched to vent-only, the cooler can serve as a whole-house fan without humidifying the surrounding air.
Operation and Maintenance
To ensure your swamp cooler operates at maximum efficiency, regular maintenance is essential. Cooling pads should be thoroughly cleaned or replaced once a month, or at least twice during the warm seasons. It's also important to drain the coolers per manufacturer instructions to remove excess moisture and sediment build-up.
