Where Should a Thermostat Be Located?
When deciding where to put your thermostat, choose a spot that stays relatively consistent with your overall home temperature. Most experts recommend mounting a thermostat on an interior wall in a central area of the home — typically in the living room, hallway or a common area that gets regular use. Installing the thermostat on an interior wall has benefits because it’s less likely to be affected by drafts or direct sunlight, giving a more accurate reading of your home’s actual temperature.
Thermostats should also be mounted around 5 feet from the floor, ideally at eye level. This placement prevents temperature extremes from being too high or too low, as temperatures closer to the ceiling or floor can be warmer or cooler. Additionally, it’s helpful to place the thermostat near the center of your home, where airflow is balanced.
How Far Should the Thermostat Be From the Return Vent?
The ideal distance varies, but generally, a thermostat should be at least 3 to 5 feet away from any air return. Being too close can lead the thermostat to sense a temperature that doesn’t reflect the room’s average temperature, causing it to turn on or off prematurely.

Where Should You Not Put a Thermostat?
Avoid installing it where heat or cold sources could interfere with its readings. Here are some places to steer clear of:
Exterior walls.
Placing a thermostat on an exterior wall exposes it to outside temperature fluctuations. This may cause the device to overheat in summer or overcool in winter, creating an inconsistent home environment.
Near doors or windows.
Drafts from doors and windows can make the thermostat think your home is cooler than it is, causing your system to heat up more frequently. This added strain on your HVAC unit increases wear and tear and elevates your energy bill.
Close to heat sources.
Avoid placing a thermostat near appliances, lamps, TVs or other heat-producing objects. These sources can make the thermostat sense a warmer temperature, which could prevent your home from reaching a comfortable level.
Direct sunlight.
A thermostat in direct sunlight will often sense that the room is hotter than it is, causing unnecessary cooling. Try to find a location shaded from any direct sunlight throughout the day.
In the kitchen.
Cooking activities raise the temperature, so a thermostat in the kitchen would read inaccurately. It’s best to install your thermostat away from this heat-heavy area.
Other Considerations for Smart Thermostats
For homes with a smart thermostat, placement considerations remain largely the same, with a few additional factors. Because many smart thermostats rely on Wi-Fi connectivity to communicate with mobile apps and optimize heating or cooling, check that the location has a strong Wi-Fi signal. The range of your Wi-Fi can sometimes limit where you can put a thermostat, but generally, any interior wall with a consistent signal will work.
Smart thermostats often come with remote sensors you can place in different rooms, helping create a more balanced temperature throughout the house.
