They have itchy skin and congested nasal passages. Fitting a whole-house humidifier will solve this problem because it raises the humidity in the home to a comfortable level.

What Does a Whole-House Humidifier Do?
A whole-home humidifier increases the humidity of the air. The contractor usually mounts it near the HVAC furnace and feeds moist air into the home's HVAC ducts. The moist air mixes with the warm, dry air from the furnace to raise the overall humidity of the air in the home.
This increase in relative humidity improves overall comfort. It reduces dry skin and nasal problems experienced from hot, dry air. Additionally, higher humidity in the air protects wood furniture and floors from damage.
How Does a Whole-Home Humidifier Work?
A humidifier increases the humidity of the air by passing air through a wet evaporative pad. As the air passes through the pad, it picks up moisture. A whole-home humidifier is part of the HVAC system, although it can be self-standing.
A fan blows the moist air from the humidifier into the air plenum after the air handler. This raises the relative humidity of the circulating air. A humidistat measures the humidity and activates a digital control system to adjust the flow of water to the humidifier. The most common types of humidifier are bypass, fan-powered, steam and free standing.
Bypass Furnace Humidifier
You install a bypass humidifier on the hot air supply ductwork after the furnace fan. Warm, pressurized air from the furnace enters the humidifier and passes through a saturated water panel in the humidifier. The dry air absorbs moisture and returns to the cold air duct just before the furnace. As the moist and dry air mix, the humidity of the return air increases. A bypass humidifier only works when the furnace is on.
Fan-Powered Humidifier
This type of humidifier uses an internal fan to blow air through the humidifier's evaporative panel. You usually fit the humidifier to the warm air duct after the furnace. The pressurized moist air exits the humidifier and mixes with dry warm air from the furnace in the ductwork.
Fan-powered models, such as the AprilAire humidifier, offer good humidity control and run independently of the furnace.
Steam Humidifier
A steam humidifier boils water and releases this moist vapor into the HVAC hot air duct. The steam flows through dispersion tubes and mixes with the dry air from the air handler. Like a fan-powered humidifier, a steam humidifier works independently of the furnace. This type of humidifier provides precise humidity control.
Freestanding Evaporative Humidifier
Evaporative humidifiers use a wick filter that draws water from a reservoir. An electrical fan blows dry air through the filter and circulates the air around the home. Relying on natural evaporation, a self-regulating evaporative humidifier doesn't need humidity controls. The only controls needed are an on and off button and a fan speed switch. Depending on the model, an evaporative humidifier can humidify an area of up to 4,000 square feet. They're best placed in large open-plan areas.

The benefits of installing a humidifier include improved air quality, lower energy costs and automatic operation. Downsides include a high initial cost and the need for periodic servicing.

Reasons you should consider installing a whole-home humidifier include:
Automatic humidity control. Whole-home humidifiers have an adjustable humidistat that allows you to set the humidity. The controller automatically compensates for variations in the humidity of the air.
Improves indoor air quality. Humidifying the air reduces illness caused by airborne diseases such as the influenza virus. The humidity in the air also improves the body's immune responses to bacteria.
Reduces dry air symptoms. Humidified air prevents dryness and discomfort, especially in the nasal passages. It helps replenish moisture on the skin and reduces the incidence of allergies and itchy skin.
Protects wood floors and furniture. The higher humidity prevents wood furniture, flooring and structures from warping, cracking or coming loose.
Low maintenance requirements. Whole-home humidifiers require minimal maintenance apart from cleaning and the replacement of evaporator panels and filters.

Whole-Home Humidifier Cons
While there are many benefits of whole-home humidifiers, there are a few downsides to consider, such as:
High cost. The cost of installing a humidifier is high. Depending on the type of humidifier and the configuration of your HVAC system, the total cost can vary from $400 to $1,200 (CAD 545 to CAD 1,634).
Not a DIY install. Unless you have specialized knowledge and the right tools, installation of a humidifier requires the services of a competent HVAC professional.
Risk of over-humidification. A poorly maintained or incorrectly set humidifier can cause excess humidity. This may create condensation on windows and cool surfaces. The EPA recommends the humidity in the home be kept below 50%.
Risk of mold and mildew. Excess humidity may encourage the growth of mold and mildew, especially in naturally damp locations like bathrooms and under sinks.
Requires periodic cleaning and filter change. Change filters and evaporator pads annually, and clean the interior of the humidifier to prevent the growth of harmful microorganisms.

How should I set the humidifier in the winter?
In winter, when the outdoor air is dry, set your indoor relative humidity to between 30% and 40%. This setting ensures you feel comfortable and, at the same time, minimizes water and energy consumption.
How should I set it in the summer?
In summer, set the humidity level to between 40% and 50%. This reduces the strain on your air conditioner.
How often do I need to replace the filter?
You should change the filter and the evaporator pads at least once a year, and more often if your water quality is poor.
Why do my windows have condensation on them?
If you have water condensing on windows, it's a sign the home's humidity is too high for the prevailing conditions. Reduce the setting on the humidistat.
