Listening carefully, you can hear the ceiling fan making a buzzing noise that sounds like a swarm of bees, but the blades stay stubbornly still. You wonder why the ceiling fan hums but won't spin and whether you can fix it without calling an electrician.

If the ceiling fan is making a noise but not spinning, it means something is stopping the motor from starting. The noise means there's power, so the reason for the motor not running is likely an electrical or mechanical issue. Here are some common reasons your ceiling fan hums but won't spin.
Why Is My Ceiling Fan Humming But Not Spinning? Electrical Reasons
Electrical issues that cause the fan motor to hum but stop it from running include:
Faulty capacitor. The capacitor used to kick-start the motor has failed (a common fault).
Loose wiring. A loose connection inside the fan housing or at the wall switch is preventing the motor from running.
Bad switch. A switch has failed and isn't allowing power through.
Common Mechanical Issues With a Ceiling Fan
Ceiling fan motors aren't powerful, so minor mechanical glitches can stop them from turning. Mechanical fan motor problems include:
Worn bearings. Tight or damaged bearings may prevent the motor from rotating.
Motor obstruction. Debris collected in the small gap between the motor's stator and rotor can cause enough friction to stop it from working.

It's a relatively simple DIY task to fix a ceiling fan that's not spinning. You need a ladder, a multimeter, tools and basic electrical knowledge. Always shut off the power at the circuit breaker box before working on the ceiling fan.
Decide whether the fault is electrical or mechanical. If the fan turns freely with the power off, the problem is likely electrical, but if it doesn't, there's probably a mechanical issue.

Here's how to fix some electrical-related issues with your fan:
Ensure There's Power
Make certain the fan has power. If it has a light, you should be able to switch it on. Alternatively, the fan should hum when the power is turned on.
Check the Capacitor
The capacitor powers a separate winding that creates the force needed to spin the fan. You can diagnose a failed capacitor by switching the fan on and using a brush handle or stick to turn the fan blades (don't use your hand). If the blades turn, the capacitor has failed. To replace the capacitor, shut off the power and open the fan housing. Find the capacitor — a small rectangular or tubular device with two wires. Remove it and buy a replacement at a hardware or big box store. Note that you may need to take down the ceiling fan to access the capacitor.
Verify the Switches Are Working
If the spinning test doesn't work, one of the switches may be faulty. Use the multimeter to test the switches for continuity and replace them if necessary. Also, check the wall switch.
Inspect for Loose or Broken Wiring
There may be a broken or loose connection. Inspect all internal terminals and switch connections. Tighten any loose wires.
Mechanical Fixes for a Fan That’s Humming But Not Turning
If the blades are hard to turn, you'll need to take down the fan and dismantle the motor to find the cause. Shut off the breaker before detaching the fan. Remove the fan blades and make a careful note of where they were installed. Release the screws securing the motor housing and open the motor.
Inspect for Damaged or Worn Bearings
Test that the bearings turn smoothly without noticeable play. If they're tight or rough, they must be replaced. Use a bearing puller to remove them and install identical replacements.
Verify the Motor Is Clean and Not Obstructed
Check that there's nothing jammed between the rotor (turning part) and the stator (stationary housing). Remove all dust and debris. Ensure the ventilation holes are clear.
Reassemble the Fan
Carefully reassemble the motor. Make certain it's properly aligned and turns freely. Reassemble the fan, making certain to reattach the fan blades in the same position they came from. Take care not to dislodge the balance weights or you'll have to rebalance the blades.
Should I Replace My Noisy Ceiling Fan?
A noisy fan fix does require some DIY knowledge, so it's not a task everyone wants to tackle. If you're not comfortable attempting the fixes, it's best to have an electrician check the ceiling fan and its installation. Alternatively, if the fan is old, it may be more economical to replace it with a new ceiling fan.
