If you're lucky enough to have a water dispenser built into your refrigerator, then you're no stranger to enjoying instant, cold, clean water at the press of a lever (or a button). However, like any appliance that handles water, it can become a breeding ground for mold, bacteria and mineral deposits.

Regular cleaning is essential to ensure that the water you and your family consume not only tastes good but is clean and safe as well. Additionally, maintaining the dispenser can prevent clogs and improve the appliance's longevity.
Things You'll Need
White vinegar
Baking soda
Mild dish soap
Warm water
Soft cloths or microfiber towels
Small brush (a toothbrush works well)
A large bowl or bucket
A funnel (optional)
Step-by-Step: How to Clean a Refrigerator Water Dispenser
Step 1: Turn Off the Water Supply
Locate the water supply valve behind your refrigerator and turn it off. This step is important so that water doesn't flow as you clean the dispenser.
Step 2: Empty the Water Dispenser
Dispense any remaining water from the fridge water line. This ensures that you are starting with an empty system. You should be able to use a large glass to collect the remaining water in the same way you use the machine to get your daily drinking water.
Step 3: Prepare a Cleaning Solution
Mix one cup of white vinegar with one cup of warm water in a bowl. White vinegar is a natural disinfectant and will help remove mineral deposits and mold in the water dispenser.
Step 4: Disassemble the Dispenser
If your refrigerator model allows, remove the water dispenser tray and any detachable parts. This will enable you to clean all components thoroughly.
Step 5: Clean the Removable Parts
Soak the detachable parts in the vinegar solution for about 10-15 minutes. After soaking, scrub them with a soft brush or cloth to remove any buildup. Rinse with warm water and set aside to dry.
Step 6: Clean the Water Line
To clean the fridge water line, use the vinegar solution. Fill a large bowl or bucket with the solution and use a funnel to pour it into the water reservoir or directly into the water line. Let it sit for about 10 to 15 minutes to break down any mineral deposits or mold. If you can't access this, you can use a small soft wire brush coated in the vinegar solution to clean the line from its exit point.
Step 7: Flush the System
After the solution has had time to work, turn on the water supply and flush the system by dispensing water into a bucket or bowl until the vinegar smell is gone. This step ensures that both the cleaning solution and all dislodged debris are removed from the system.
Step 8: Clean the Exterior
Wipe down the exterior of the dispenser with a cloth soaked in warm, soapy water. Pay special attention to the nozzle and any crevices where mold and bacteria can accumulate. Rinse several times with a clean, damp cloth and dry with a soft towel.
Step 9: Reassemble the Dispenser
Once all parts are clean and dry, reassemble the dispenser. Ensure that all components are securely in place.
Step 10: Final Flush
Dispense and discard a few more glasses of water to ensure the system is thoroughly rinsed, and any remaining vinegar taste is eliminated.
