It’s a term used by HVAC professionals to explain a behavior that prevents furnaces from doing what they're supposed to: keeping your property at the temperature you want.

What Is Short-Cycling?
Short-cycling is when your furnace decides to start and stop for no obvious reason. It runs for a short burst before abruptly shutting down, only to repeat the cycle ad nauseam. Instead of enjoying a steady flow of cozy heat, you’re left shivering in the cold, wondering what's going on with your heating system. It can also refer to your furnace never quite getting to the temperature you've set before it shuts down.
Why Does My Furnace Keep Cycling on and Off?
There are several reasons your furnace might short-cycle. One of the most common culprits is an oversized furnace. Yes, you read that right: A furnace can be too big for a home. If yours isn’t the right size for your property, it might heat your home too quickly, which could cause your thermostat to reach the desired temperature prematurely and trigger an early shutdown. As your home starts to cool down, the furnace cranks up again, and the same thing happens repeatedly.
Another frequent cause of short-cycling is a dirty flame sensor. This tiny but crucial component detects whether the furnace burner is lit. However, when it becomes coated with grime and debris (which it eventually will), it may fail to recognize the flame, prompting the furnace to shut off as a safety precaution.

Thankfully, there are things you can do to stop your furnace from short-cycling. You might be able to do some yourself if you feel confident enough.
Let’s look at the solutions. But before we do, you need to understand what a British Thermal Unit is in relation to furnaces. It’s a measurement of the amount of heat needed to create a heating environment. One BTU represents the quantity of heat required to increase the temperature of a pound of water by 1 degree Fahrenheit.
Is Your Furnace the Right Size?
First, take a good hard look at the size of your furnace. If it’s oversized for your home, it's time to call in an HVAC professional. They can assess your heating needs and recommend a properly sized furnace that will keep you cozy without the constant start-and-stop routine.
How will you know if your furnace is oversized? As a rule of thumb, heating 1 square foot of a home requires 30 BTUs. So, if your home is 1,000 square feet, you need a furnace with a 30,000 BTU output. More output than that, and the furnace is too big.
Check the Air Filters
Dirty filters are the enemy of efficient heating, restricting airflow and causing your furnace to overheat. This can trigger its safety features and lead to short-cycling. Make it a habit to replace your filters regularly to keep your furnace happy and your home comfortably warm. Most HVAC professionals recommend replacing filters every 90 days (or 3 months).
Check the Thermostat
Is your thermostat pulling its weight? A faulty thermostat can send mixed signals to your furnace, causing it to cycle on and off unexpectedly. If you suspect your thermostat is to blame, consider upgrading to a programmable or smart thermostat for greater control and energy savings.
Also, check if your thermostat is in a warmer part of your home or in direct sunlight. If so, move it to somewhere cooler if you can.
Is Ventilation the Issue?
Don't underestimate the power of proper ventilation. Blocked or restricted vents can disrupt airflow and cause overheating, triggering furnace short-cycling. Keep your vents clear of obstructions and ensure air can flow freely throughout your home to maintain optimal heating efficiency.
Last but not least, give your furnace some much-needed TLC by scheduling regular maintenance. A professional tune-up can uncover any lurking issues within your heating system, from dirty components to faulty thermostats.
