Installing a Hardwired Detector: Step by Step
Warning: Installing a hardwired CO detector in your home requires quite a bit of electrical know-how and interaction with your breaker box. Unless you are an accomplished DIYer, you might want to enlist the help of a licensed electrician to do the work for you. An electrical job gone wrong can have serious consequences, so you need to seriously evaluate your skills before embarking on a potentially sparky project.
But if you feel confident enough to get the job done, here's how.
Things You'll Need
Hardwired carbon monoxide detector
Electrical box (if not already in place)
Voltage tester
Wire strippers
Screwdrivers (Phillips and flat-head)
Drill and drill bits (if needed for mounting)
Fish tape (for running wire through walls)
Wire nuts
Electrical tape
Ladder (if installing on the ceiling or high on a wall)
Step 1: Choose the Right Location
Install detectors on every level of your home, especially near sleeping areas. Place detectors at least 5 feet above the floor, as carbon monoxide rises with warm air. Avoid installing near fuel-burning appliances, as this can cause false alarms.
Step 2: Turn Off the Power
Before beginning any electrical work, turn off the power at the main circuit breaker to ensure your safety. Use a voltage tester to confirm that the power is off.
Step 3: Install the Electrical Box
If there is no existing electrical box, install one where you plan to place the detector. Use a stud finder to locate a stud and mount the box securely. If installing on the ceiling, ensure it is centered between joists.
Step 4: Run the Wiring
Use fish tape to run wiring from the circuit breaker panel to the location of the new detector. Ensure you are using the correct type of wire (typically 14/2 or 12/2 Romex for most home installations).
Step 5: Connect the Wires
Strip the ends of the wires and connect them to the detector's wiring harness. Match the black (hot) wire, white (neutral) wire and the green or bare copper (ground) wire with the corresponding wires in the electrical box. Secure the connections with wire nuts, and wrap them with electrical tape for added safety.
Step 6: Mount the Detector
Attach the mounting plate to the electrical box using screws. Then, connect the detector to the mounting plate, ensuring it clicks into place securely. Some detectors may also have a backup battery that needs to be installed.
Step 7: Restore Power and Test
Turn the power back on at the circuit breaker. Test the detector by pressing the test button, ensuring it sounds the alarm. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for any additional setup or testing procedures.
Step 8: Interconnect Multiple Detectors
If installing multiple hardwired detectors, they should be interconnected so that if one detects CO, all alarms will sound. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for connecting the interconnect wire (typically a third wire, often red).
