The process is straightforward: gather biodegradable materials, manage decomposition conditions and apply the finished compost to enrich your soil. How to Set Up a Home Compost System
Things You’ll Need
Green materials (fruit and vegetable scraps, coffee grounds, tea leaves, fresh grass clippings, plant trimmings)
Brown materials (dry leaves, straw, hay, shredded newspaper, uncoated cardboard, wood chips, untreated sawdust, chemical-free paper towels/napkins)
Compost bin or designated compost area (store-bought bin, wooden pallets, repurposed garbage can or wire mesh enclosure)
Pitchfork or shovel
Garden hose or watering can
Tarp or straw (for optional covering)
Step 1: Choose the Right Location
Find a dry, shaded spot in your yard with good drainage. Ideally, place your compost bin directly on the ground to allow earthworms and beneficial microbes to speed up decomposition. If you're in an area with heavy rainfall, consider using a covered bin to prevent excess moisture.
Avoid placing the compost pile near wooden fences or structures, as the moisture and decomposition process can cause wood rot over time.
Step 2: Set Up Your Compost Bin or Pile
Your composting system can be either contained (a bin) or open-air (a pile), depending on your space and preferences.
Compost bins. Ideal for urban or suburban homes, enclosed bins help control odor, retain heat for faster decomposition and keep pests away. You can purchase a ready-made bin or DIY one using wooden pallets, wire mesh or a repurposed garbage can.
Compost piles. Best for large backyards, open piles require minimal setup but need regular maintenance to prevent attracting wildlife.
Regardless of which method you choose, airflow is essential. Ensure your bin or pile allows oxygen to circulate to prevent compaction and unpleasant odors. If using a bin, look for one with ventilation holes or create some yourself to keep the decomposition process efficient.
Step 3: Layer Your Green and Brown Materials
A well-balanced compost pile needs the right mix of green (nitrogen-rich) materials and brown (carbon-rich) materials to decompose efficiently. Aim for a 3:1 ratio of browns to greens to maintain proper aeration and nutrient balance.
Green materials break down quickly and provide the nitrogen necessary for microbial activity. Add fruit and vegetable scraps (peels, cores, rinds), coffee grounds, tea leaves, fresh grass clippings and plant trimmings like wilted flowers or weeds.
Brown materials help with structure, aeration and moisture absorption. Use dry leaves, straw, hay, shredded newspaper, uncoated cardboard, wood chips and sawdust from untreated wood. Even paper towels and napkins (as long as they are free of chemicals and dyes) can be composted.
Start with a base layer of coarse brown materials like twigs or straw to improve drainage and airflow. Then, alternate layers of greens and browns, mixing each layer lightly to prevent clumping. This ensures even decomposition and avoids unpleasant odors.
What You Can't Compost
It's just as important to know what not to compost. Avoid meat, dairy and greasy foods, which attract pests and create odors. Diseased plants and weeds with seeds can cause future garden problems, while pet waste may introduce harmful bacteria. Non-biodegradable materials like plastic, metal and glass also should never go into compost. By using the right ingredients and avoiding problematic ones, you'll ensure your compost breaks down efficiently into nutrient-rich soil.
Step 4: Maintain Moisture and Airflow
Your compost should be damp, like a wrung-out sponge. Too much moisture leads to unpleasant odors, while a dry pile slows decomposition. If the pile is too dry, sprinkle some water with a garden hose or watering can. If it’s too wet, add more dry leaves or shredded newspaper.
Turning the compost every one to two weeks with a pitchfork or shovel ensures proper aeration and speeds up the breakdown process.
Step 5: Monitor Decomposition Progress
Depending on factors like temperature, moisture and pile size, composting can take anywhere from two months to a year. Look for these signs of progress:
Steam or warmth is a sign of active microbial activity.
Darker, crumbly texture indicates proper breakdown.
Earthy smell means your compost is maturing well.
Step 7: Harvest and Use Your Compost
When your compost looks dark and crumbly with a rich, earthy smell, it’s ready to use. Sift through the pile and remove any large, undecomposed materials to add back into the bin.
You can use finished compost for the following purposes:
Enrich garden beds and improve soil health.
Mix into potting soil for houseplants.
Spread as mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds.

Troubleshooting Common Composting Issues
Even with proper layering, compost piles can sometimes develop issues. A strong, unpleasant odor usually means there’s too much moisture or an imbalance between green and brown materials. If the pile smells sour or rotten, turn it more frequently to improve airflow and mix in extra dry leaves, shredded newspaper or straw to absorb excess moisture.
On the other hand, if decomposition is slow and materials remain mostly intact for weeks, the pile may be too dry or lack nitrogen. Lightly sprinkling water while turning the pile and adding more fruit and vegetable scraps can help speed up the process.
Another common problem is a pile that becomes compacted, restricting airflow and slowing decomposition. Regularly turning the compost with a pitchfork or shovel helps introduce oxygen and prevents material from clumping together. If pests or excess moisture are concerns, covering the pile with a breathable material like a tarp or a layer of straw can help.
A tarp shields the pile from heavy rain while still allowing airflow, while straw acts as a natural moisture buffer. Just be sure to remove or adjust the covering periodically to ensure proper ventilation.
