DIY Plumbing: How to Install a Toilet

What would we do without toilets in our homes? We could answer that, but let’s not go there. Instead, let’s talk about replacing your tired old toilet with a shiny new one. It might seem daunting, but with a little preparation and the right tools, it's a project well within reach for most DIYers.

Things You'll Need

As everyone knows, the key to success is preparation, so before covering the installation, let’s discuss the tools and materials for the job. You’ll need the following:

Tools: Adjustable wrench, crescent wrench, hacksaw, screwdriver (flathead and Phillips), bucket and a utility knife

Materials: Your new toilet, wax ring (two are recommended in case of error), toilet seat (if not included with the new toilet), shut-off valve (optional, depending on your existing setup), plumber's tape and plenty of rags

How to Remove the Existing Toilet

1. Turn off the water supply: Locate the shut-off valve behind the toilet. Turn it clockwise until it stops completely. Flush the toilet to remove any remaining water in the tank.

2. Remove the tank: Typically, there are two bolts or nuts that secure the tank to the bowl. Locate these and unscrew them to remove the tank.

3. Disconnect the water supply line: Using an adjustable wrench, loosen the nut connecting the water supply line to the toilet's fill valve. Place a rag under the connection to catch any drips.

4. Loosen the closet bolts: These are the two bolts that secure the toilet bowl to the floor. You'll find them beneath the decorative bolt caps. Use an adjustable wrench to loosen the nuts on the bolts, turning counterclockwise.

5. Remove the toilet: Carefully move the toilet back and forth to break the wax ring seal. Lift the toilet straight up and away from the flange (the drainpipe opening on the floor). Set it aside in a safe location.

6. Clean the flange: Use a rag and a utility knife to remove any old wax ring residue or debris from the top of the flange. Be careful with the knife as it’s very sharp. Ideally, wear cut-resistant gloves.

How to Install the New Toilet

1. Install the wax ring: Center the new wax ring over the flange opening. If it's a two-piece, press it firmly onto the flange and then position the plastic funnel on top.

2. Position the toilet bowl: Lower the toilet bowl straight down onto the flange, ensuring the closet bolts protrude through the holes in the base.

3. Set the toilet: Press firmly on the toilet bowl to compress the wax ring and create a seal. Hand-tighten the closet bolt nuts in alternating turns to secure the toilet evenly. Don't overtighten, as this can crack the toilet bowl.

4. Attach the tank bolts: Most tanks come pre-drilled for tank bolts. Insert the tank bolts from inside the tank, threading them through the holes in the toilet bowl.

5. Set the tank: Place the tank on the bowl, aligning the holes with the bolts. Slide the rubber gasket (usually included with the toilet) over the bolts and onto the bowl.

6. Attach the tank nuts and washers: From underneath the tank, place a washer and nut onto each tank bolt. Tighten the nuts by hand first, then use a wrench to tighten them alternately, achieving a snug fit without cracking the tank.

7. Reconnect the water supply line: Wrap the threads of the toilet's fill valve with the plumber's tape. Using the wrench, reconnect the water supply line to the fill valve, ensuring a secure connection.

8. Turn on the water supply: Slowly turn on the shut-off valve behind the toilet. Check for leaks at the connection point and around the toilet's base. Tighten any loose connections as needed.

9. Install the toilet seat: Most toilet seats attach with plastic wing nuts and bolts. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for your specific seat.

10: Add the final touches: Install the decorative bolt caps (if included) over the closet bolts. Flush the toilet a few times to check for proper function and leaks.

Additional Toilet Installation and Plumbing Tips

• If you find any leaks during the installation process, remove the toilet and replace the wax ring.

• Take pictures of your old toilet connections before disconnecting anything, as these can be a helpful reference during the installation of the new toilet.
