“It brought me to tears it was so wonderful,” Pixie T. of Fenton, Michigan, said of the ServLine Leak Protection Program.
As an older adult living on a fixed income, Pixie depends on her bills being predictable so she can budget accordingly. So, she knew that her water bill should be around $50 – firmly within her budget.
Luckily for her pocketbook, Pixie had been made aware of the ServLine Leak Protection Program some time earlier when her local utility was doing work in the area to find a leak on the water main. When she called for more information about the project and water leaks in general, she learned about the program.
The program, which is offered through local utilities, helps protect homeowners from large bills caused by plumbing leaks. Once a leak is identified and repaired, ServLine will determine the customer’s average bill over the prior 12 months and then pay the overage up to the benefit amount.
So, when Pixie received her big bill, she knew two things – she likely had a water leak somewhere in her home of eight years, and that she needed to call ServLine.
“When I called ServLine, I was so sick that I couldn’t stop coughing and could barely talk,” she said. “They told me what to do and that the (high water bill) would probably roll over into next month, too. (Customer Service Agent) Terry, who helped me, was so sweet and everything went wonderfully. I knew what I needed to do and I knew (ServLine) would do what they said they would do. Physically and emotionally, it made me feel so much better.”
“I pay my bills, but when it went from $50 to $660, I needed help. I have to buy groceries, pay for insurance, so when I looked at that (water) bill, it was a pretty bad feeling.”
If only finding the leak was easy.
Pixie hired a plumber to seek out the leak, but they found themselves stymied, especially since there was no obvious source.
“I had a plumber come out,” she said. “He looked in the toilet and under the house. He put dye in the toilet tank and was sticking things in the ground – he couldn’t find anything.”
In the end, Pixie had the plumber change out the entire mechanism in her toilet tank, just to be on the safe side, and it seemed to address her leak problem. Once that was done, ServLine took care of the overage in her water bill.
“It couldn’t have gone any smoother,” Pixie said. “They only thing they didn’t do was pay the regular monthly bill for me.”
