Empowering Growth Through Training: A HomeServe Grant in Action

The HomeServe Skilled Trades Apprenticeship and Training Grant provides funding to HomeServe’s network contractors to invest in employee training, strengthen their workforce, and expand business capabilities. This initiative demonstrates HomeServe's deep commitment to the trades by directly supporting workforce development and the future of skilled labor.

For Andrew Chartrand, building a successful plumbing business isn’t just about day-to-day work—it’s about investing in the future of his team and the trades. In 2026, Andrew’s Ontario, Canada-based company, Drew's Plumbing & Heating Ltd., was selected as one of just 20 recipients of the HomeServe Skilled Trades Apprenticeship and Training Grant, chosen from a pool of more than 150 applicants across HomeServe’s North American contractor network.

Andrew used the grant to support one of his employees, Hunter O’Link, a plumbing apprentice who has been with the company for three years. With the help of the grant, Hunter enrolled in the TSSA Gas Technician 3 program at George Brown College, a certification course running from January through June 2026. The program equips participants with the skills needed to safely work with gas-fired appliances and gas lines—an important credential that closely complements plumbing expertise.

For Andrew, the decision to invest in this training was straightforward. “It was an opportunity for job advancement and strengthening skills,” he said. “Plumbing and heating go hand in hand, so having this certification will be a real asset once his apprenticeship is completed.”

That alignment between trades is exactly where the impact begins to take shape. By expanding Hunter’s skillset, Andrew is also strengthening the capabilities of his entire business—positioning the company to take on more specialized work and better serve customers. “It will help my business grow with more skilled technicians,” Andrew explained. “And yes, it will allow us to expand what we offer.”

Since launching his business in April 2021, Andrew has focused on delivering professional, reliable service to his community. He sees training as a core part of that commitment—not just for growth, but for maintaining quality. “Training strengthens our employees’ skills and knowledge, and that reflects in our work,” he said.

Receiving the HomeServe grant has made that investment more accessible, highlighting HomeServe's commitment to the trades through tangible financial support. “We are very grateful for receiving this opportunity,” Andrew added. “It helps out a lot.”

As Hunter progresses through the program, Andrew’s story reflects the broader mission of the HomeServe Skilled Trades Apprenticeship and Training Grant Program: empowering contractors to invest in their people, elevate the quality of their work and help build a stronger future for the trades.
